I grew up as a teen ager in c squared in the 50's and 60's and I am sure it as changed but really that bad?

I have heard it is no longer the city by the sparkling sea.

The t and l heads are dead.

downtown is dead and malls are dying

grafitti and potholes everywhere

bad schools

I want to visit for spring break but if this is true give me some constructive info.

I honestly don't think it's nearly as bad as everyone says.

Really all of what you're asking depends on what part of the city your in. Past Six Points and headed towards Crosstown and the areas around Memorial seem to be the worst off.

Stuff around Six Points seems to be OK, don't know a lot about how the big banks are doing.

Sunrise Mall is probably dying, the one on Staples is nice. Lots of shopping on Saratoga.

Southside is booming, Flour Bluff is getting gentrified; a lot of the old standbys are falling on bad times if they are in the old parts of town.

The town's problem is partly brain drain and partly that it is not geographically or demographically situated to benefit from the boom situations in some other places in Texas.

If you look at the places that are doing well, they all either have a research university or two or they have a location athwart major transportation arteries or they are on the border. None of those fit Corpus.

The university is too small though it is growing, we are not on the border and the only major transportation artery is the port, which is the lifeblood of the town.

So it is not booming, it is just holding its own.

The brain drain has really hurt because it deprives the town of a lot of its best products.

Finally, it is the only town I ever lived in where the owners are not particularly involved in running the place. The cream of the elite crop will not run for public office because of the ethnic smears. So you get a lot of third raters, people who get elected because of the color of their skin and of course the real estate related people. Not a great mix so far.

Price's Chef is still there and about the same; there is a nice coffee shop/bakery place across Palmero from it but Cage's is gone and the bank there is shuttered. Roosevelt Baker bit the dust last year, etc.

The neighborhoods to the east are sprucing up a bit.

This morning's Caller says the city council is wanting to put the lights back on the harbor bridge---at a cost of over $400k. When you finish the pothole dodging contest you will understand why that seems insane to some of us.

As one of the councilmen said, "It will make a great postcard."

They should worry about slapping another coat of paint on it first.

Paint slapping on that bridge is the responsibility of the great State of Texas but you are right about it needing one real bad.

More good news from the Caller: our newish mayor has promoted a community Pride program; they have still not found an appropriate person to head up the effort.

So far they have decided to have some photo ops for the City Council zeros to have their pix taken picking up trash at selected locations. You can create your own captions for their efforts.

Mesquite tree so you live in CC? You and I have had so different views but gee souds like you are a good guy now I know you live in Corpus. I grew up on the westside near Navigation Blvd. Attended Oak ParK elementary, Robert Driscoll Jr. High and just getting ready to attend Roy Miller when we moved.

lived out near Miller when I was a wee sprout but we moved to a horrid village a few counties north and I missed out on the total experience. Been back for over twenty years and though it has its drawbacks, I like the place a lot.

Lots of outdoor stuff and it is easy to make a living here even if you aren't in the heroin or coke business.

In my day the two big rivals were Ray and Miller. rich kids went to Ray. we lived on poor side of town and were meskins (like me)

Ray kids always teased us about the Buc band. as the band marched out on the field they would spell miller.

so the ray kids would go

M M Mel
LLLer........MELLLER like we meskins could not spell Miller correctly. Lots of fights.

Not all of us that went to Ray in the 60's were rich of course Howard E Butt III was voted the most likely to succeed my senior year.I do remember my numerous Meskin friends coming up with a yell for the Miller game.

Corpus itself is a real dump. Don't move here unless you have a job or don't need a job. The city leaders are incompetent and just plain stupid. The business climate is so bad that the city basically needs a bullet right through its head so they can just start over. The population is shrinking because the city leaders don't want any "out of town" companies to locate here because they might be successful. The local powers that be have an extreme case of jealousy of anyone making more money/potentially making more money than they do.

With that being said, the normal folks that live here are great. It is a city with a small town feel. There is always something to do; if you are bored in Corpus, it is your own fault. The city is one of the friendliest places on Earth and it is easy to meet people. It is too bad the city itself is so dysfunctional because most of the folks that live here are first class and deserve better.

On Thanksgiving a local fellow stabbed his girlfriend with a steak knife when they argued over where to eat dinner. They left the house for a while and the argument started again and he stabbed her again.

This was the big news yesterday.

The big news today is that the child of a guy who used to work for one of the local tv stations got killed in Florida.

It does not have to be big news to be news in CC. It just has to bleed.

I love CC, my hometown. It has changed tremendously, but we always have fun because our families still work & live there. There is always something to do no matter what time of year. Padre Island is always a blast. Dining out on the island or downtown is fabulous. Brings back great memories. I hope they will clean up CC and soon. Get rid of the old courthouse & coliseum. It sure makes CC look bad. They need to get someone with a little back bone and spend some money!
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Glad I found this thread. For whatever reason CC came up as a place my wife and I were thinking of going for a 3 day weekend. Any suggestions? Looking at hotels I'm thinking of staying at the Radisson. Just wanted some thoughts.

I lived in CC when i 2-4, so my memory is pretty much nill.

the fishing, the hunting and the ease to move around to get to the fishing and hunting areas is the ONLY reason to live in the coastal bend. I have never understood why anyone who doesnt do either of those activities would ever live in the area. Corpus is a dump but its the meca for easy outdoor activity.

My favorite fishing spot is thirty minutes from my office; I live near downtown and can get to my hog shooting heaven near bayside in 25 minutes and have two bird fields within twenty minutes.

This place really sucks.

The rest of you sorry mofos go away.

Del Mar neighborhood (not by the college but off the street of that name) and anywhere within three blocks of Ocean Drive once you get past Louisiana Parkway.

I love Corpus. I do not know why it gets such a bad rap. It is what it is, nothing else. If you have ever lived in Houston, or any other big city, Corpus is a breath of fresh air, literally.

Fishing, hunting, boating, live music venues, it is all there. If you can't find the good in Corpus, I doubt you will ever find the good anywhere you live.

Yeah, Corpus doesn't have the galleria, or a six flags, but if you want one of those, JUST MOVE.

I am hoping to move back as soon as possible, I am in East Texas, and I would take a vato pot smoker any day over the inbred meth head people up here. Seriously.

South Texas Trailer Trash >>>>> East Texas Trailer Trash
