I am going to be in Galveston this weekend for the first time in several years. I actually lived down there for a year while I was at TAMUG, but didn't eat at the local places.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to eat; and please don't say Gaido's.

i second all of these choices.

for "fine seafood" though, shearn's is, in my opinion, heads and shoulders better than anything else on the island.

i'd also add queen's for a good BBQ joint. the cliffhanger is awesome.

Giados by far the best.

I highly recommend Mosquito Cafe, Mi Abuelitas, DiBellas. If you're in town in the morning, I would also recommend a Bronco Burrito from the Donut Shoppe (Blue house next to the Shell Station on Broadway -- if you're a Sea Aggie you'll probably recognize the building).

I've eaten at Sunflower Cafe several times before... but last Sunday for brunch I ordered their crab cake Benedict... EFFING YUMMM! It's two crab cakes, each topped with a poached egg and hollandaise. It was fabulous, I'll be going back for that dish alone.

Try - Sonny's Place @ 1206 19th St. This place is a local hangout. The place is a little scary looking but great food, but Cash or check only.

901 Postoffice

This place is really starting to rise up my charts. The quality of their meat and seafood is unquestionable. Then they pair it with some of the most intriguing down home sides - parmesan plobano cheese grits, corn cakes/corn bread pudding, mashed sweet potatos and mashed potato caserole.

Gourmet with a dose of down home. Pricey, but worth it.

My girlfriend and I have been talking about where to go for out monthly date night... 901 postoffice sounds like it'll hit the spot nicely. Thanks fairwayag!

No pushes for Star Drug Store!? The best hamburger on the island, not open for dinner hours though!

Ate at Sonny's over the weekend. We liked it... as someone said, the gumbo was fantastic.

i like star drug store just fine. but usually when i go there, i just get a sandwich and, imo, the sandwiches are better at both sunflower and the lunchbox

Star Drug has a good burger? This is the first time I've heard that. I will have to give it a try. At least it gives me a reason to go back. I sort of wrote them off my list. The cold sandwiches didn't do much for me.

Fairway, I was stunned when someone shared the news of the burger with me, but after I ordered it, I agreed. The burger with a side of potato salad is an epic winner there.

I like their salmon sandwich.

Don't usually go out of my way for a "salmon sandwich".

So I had the Healthy Chinese Buffet for lunch today. It was pretty good, but I doubt it will be heavy in my rotation. I will say the best part is the mongolian/hibachi grill section. The hot n sour soup and korean soup were both tasty. The egg roll and spring roll aren't worth the calories. The stuffed shrimp and stuffed mushrooms were good. There was definitely some pork in the stuffing. The seaweed salad and pot stickers were winners. The apple pie was surprisingly good. It was very flaky.

Haven't been there in awhile, but I really liked Benno's. Last time I was there I ate a freakin' ton of crawfish. Good stuff.

We have been vacationing in Galveston for years, try to eat only local and are becoming disappointed by the options available - Joe's Crab Shack bought out HIll's - we used to go to the Pier 21 location every year. Ocean Grill became a Hooter's before Ike destroyed it.

Gaido's used to be at the top of our list, but we have been disappointed in it the past several trips. It used to be a nice, "dress-up" dinner out, but this trip, we sat next to people who looked like they just walked in off the beach, two annoying women were behind us, and a couple with a fussy baby were across from us. At least the waitress didn't bring me a platter of shrimp and then argue with me when I told her it wasn't what I ordered (I'm allergic to shrimp). We sent back a second night just for dessert, and the person at the door was quite rude and wouldn't seat us or let us order take out. We may just cross it off our list for future trips.

Now Casey's next door is a different story. We had lunch there one day and dinner another night. We also tried to go in late for dessert one night (between 8:30 and 9:00) and weren't seated or served, but the manager was very nice about it, apoligized for them already being closed and not having anything available to send with us. When we went back for dinner the next day, he remembered us stopping in the night before and sent us dessert. The food was excellent, the staff polite and helpful, and prices were reasonable. We will definately be going back to Casey's.

Rudy and Paco's - our new favorite place. The snapper with rasberry chipolte sauce simply cannot be beat - best meal I've had. Dress nice and call for reservations. Expensive - but well worth the cost. Have a coupls of drinks at the Stork Club across the street before dinner - much more affordable drinks there.

Picked up brisket and sausage, beans and potato salad and cole slaw at Leon's and took it back to the hotel for lunch. Still the oldest son's favorite - he was one happy boy when someone in our group pointed out that Leon catered weddings - his girlfriend was less than thrilled. I still want to try Queen's because of what I've read here, but Leon's is still our favorite barbecue place on the Island.

Fishtails is pretty good, The Spot was great.

And the kids wanted mexican food one night and tried to go to Mi Abuelitas, but said it was closed. Did they just pick a bad night? They ended up at Salsa's and said it was good.

This used to be one of our favorites, but not so much anymore. We decided that their quality has gone down.

Now we have turned to Miller's Landing!!! Delicious!!

Mi Abuelitas is only open for breakfast and lunch. Kind of strange, but a lot of the best mexican places on the island are closed for dinner. Salsa's stays busy so they must be doing something right or maybe its the location. I've had it a few times and never was impressed. I would do The Original (14 & Market) or Tortugas (61st & Seawall - awesome coconut shrimp) befor Salsa's. Gordita's (7th & Seawall) is underrated. They are slighty more traditional mexican, but still enough texmex to be good. I like the little set up they've got going on that corner. They really spruced it up.

Sadly Gaido's is not what it once was. They still put out some great stuff, but the consistency is not there. Might as well stick to Casey's. It is basically the same kitchen.

It occurred to me last night that I haven't seen any good fried chicken places on the island. I am not interested in Churches or Popeye's... I'm talking about real, home cooking style fried chicken. You guys know of anything?

My best guess would be the place on about 26th & Ball (or Sealy)--haven't been there in a long time.

76 is talking about Simps. That is the place I would try. I still haven't been, but I always hear good things about them.

Any remember John's Oyster Resort? They used put out some good fried chicken.
