We are leaving on a cruise in a few weeks from Galveston and will need to head out I-10 E upon our return to Louisiana. Would it be quicker for us to catch the ferry and travel via Hwy 87 or to travel back up 45 and travel around the far east side of Houston?.

Depends on the time of day, day of week and what the weather is like. Look up the phone number to the ferry office before your cruise. When you are ready to head out, call and ask the wait time. If it's less than an hour I'd wait for the ferry. If more, head up the hwy.

Def. check the weather as Hwy 87 to High Island is being closed periodically when it rains alot.
