Off the beaten path - Shrimp & Stuff, 3901 Avenue O.
Best value - plus quality.
Looks like an old fashion neighborhood converted grocery store (on the corner).
Avoid high traffic times.
Best kept secret by locals who hate the tourist traps.

Only negative.
It has sort of a fast food atmosphere.
From a big board you place a counter order and given a number. Number is called. You get your drink then tote your food to a table and eat.
Clean & friendly service.
Also, you'll look around at the clientel and also feel you are among an authenic Galvestonian neighborhood restaurant setting.
No reservations. No linen tablecloths. No tipping.
Pretty good table turnover when Bop was last there, Jan 2010. Again, try to go during slack hours.
Great seafood.

i'd agree it's the best "value" seafood on the island. you can get better food elsewhere, but not for that price.

Did Clary's ever reopen after the hurricane?

Yes, but then they had a fire last July(?). Don't know if they've reopened since then.

Clary's is open. Glad you found Shrimp n Stuff. Try the gumbo next time.

In the "I would have never expected that" category, you locals should try the fried shrimp at The Taco House. I would put them against any shrimp on the island.

Interesting about the fried shrimp at Taco House. Never even been in the place. Will have to give it a try.

The Cajun Greek is great as well. Shrimp N Stuff has always been a local favorite, plus he's a neighbor of mine :-)

Ah, Galveston seafood.

Shrimp N'Stuff is a whole hell of a lot better than it has to be for what it is. That place used to make its lifeblood off of high school students (the only public high school in town is two blocks up) back when the inmates were allowed to leave the campus for lunch. It's fried, fried-er, and fried-est, but it's done right--and Bop is right, it is a definite 'local' place.

Benno's is hit or miss, IMO...I've had to wait way too long for food on some occasions but it's the best Galveston example of 'Louisiana style' seafood.

Fisherman's Wharf was a charming place to get fresh seafood thirty years ago, and had a real fish counter to boot. Now it's just another Landry's chain establishment.

Gaido's...just makes me sad. There was a time when that was one of the ten best restaurants in the greater Houston area...maybe Texas. To call it a shell of itself is an insult to places that are shells of themselves. Similar story with the King's Inn in South Texas, although Gaido's at its best was better.

Best seafood in town is probably Shearn's at Moody Gardens, although the chef has literally been serving the same menu for 20 years (dating back to when he was at another place). It's overpriced though, and stuffier than a Galveston restaurant needs to be.
