Howdy yall, due to the extreme competitiveness of this year's getting into Texas A&M, I was not accepted (for reasons I do not know). I love Texas A&M and have loved Texas A&M all 18 years of my life, so I refuse to give up on my dream and will be going to A&M Galveston this year before transferring next year.

I just wanted to ask yall what the school is really like, what to watch out for, what to get involved in, etc.

thanks and gig em'

My son went the TAMUG route and is now about to be a senior in College Station. It is in my opinion by far the best way to get to TAMU if not accepted initially.

I assume you know that Galveston is just the south branch of TAMU. You are an Aggie.

Treat it just as you would TAMU. Get involved in activities that interest you. There are only around 1800 students so you have the chance to get to know most everyone and your professors much more closely.

Just make sure to get at least a 2.5 gpa so that there is no problem when the time comes to change majors and head to College Station.

Make sure you maintain a 2.5, and you will be set to transfer. If you have any questions, I'm a former academic advisor and could give you some insight or connect you with contacts that currently work at A&M. Email me at dford05@gmail.com

Chase, go to A&M Galveston for the next 4 years and graduate from there. I went to both. And if I had it to do over again, I would have done all 4 years at Tamug. I know you are disappointed about not getting a shot, and I love your persistence. But As you know, and is stated above Galveston is the 11th college of Tamu. You pull tickets for every home game, you get the same ring, and the same diploma. However, you don't get the bull**** of have going toma school with 50,000 other students. In Galveston, you will have the opportunity to know all of your classmates (only about 2500 students total). You will get the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with your professors. 20 to 1 teacher/student ratio instead of 400 to 1 in college station. Galveston is a much better town to be an Aggie in than College Station is. I know it counterintuitive, but the PD in college station is affectionately referred to as the Gestapo. They drive around town looking for parties to break up. In Galveston, the police have real problems. I can tell you a dozen stories where the Galveston cops drove Drunk Ags back to pelican island when they could have taken them to jail.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my time at In college Station as well. But I think A&M Galveston is an underrated asset of A&M, amongst Aggies.

I also went to both. I was a MARB major and most classes and all of the biology classes, at TAMUG were harder than main campus. I graduated in Galveston and I am as Aggie as anyone who walked Reed.

This is a reason to stay in Galveston? Because you drink and don't want to deal with CSPD? It is such a weight on your shoulders and in your mind that you actually took the time to post those words?

What did you major in, distillation processes of sour mash?

Wow. I have never had any run-ins with the CSPD or UPD. Don't be a complete idiot and the cops won't bother you. It really is that simple.

My son wants to major in Industrial Distribution. He is a really good student, but of course we are concerned he may not get in his freshman year. We were told TAMUG is a good option for the first year taking basic courses, then transfer into ID program in CS. The other option is UofH who also has a very good ID program.

I have been bothered multiple times, by CSPD, including a few arrests. But no convictions.

Complete idiot, huh? Do you always talk to fellow Ags that way?

Chase - I'm in the same boat as you, but I am at least as excited about going to TAMUG as I would be about going to college station because the majority of my friends and family are in Galveston County and I LOVE to fish.

As mentioned above, the sports pass option is available through Howdy and also when you attend your new student conference at TAMUG (I think).

Went to TAMUG my first year and graduated from TAMU in 3 years total with a degree in Finance. TAMUG was awesome - loved every minute of it. You will not be set back any by going there if you eventually decide to move to CS. Keep your head straight and focused on the goal! Gig 'em!

I'm a junior MARA major, I definitely enjoy Galveston.

Always makes me laugh when fellow ags ask why I don't go to the "real" A&M, something about being surrounded by the industry you're going to be working in just seems appealing.

I recommend you going there for your 1st year. I was wait listed and then did not get in and was pretty disappointed. I knew the TAMUG option was there but did not like the idea of being in Galveston. But after it was all said and done,it was the BEST option by far. Much better option then Blinn. Posted over a 3.5 both semesters and was a great step from high school to college. Besides you get awesome seats for football games. I am now a senior in College Station. Be sure to get involved. You will meet some fun people down there.

This!

The job market for most of the majors at TAMUG is great. The science degrees (Marine Biology, Marine Science, Marine Fishieres ect.) have a harder time finding something without at least a Masters. But the Engineering and Management degrees do very well right out of school.

Most, if not all, of the professors are still in their industry to some extent and are happy to help those who show initiative.

You graduate into a niche worldwide market that is really looking for people with degrees from Maritime schools. Of which there are about five in the country. Many students are picking a job, not waiting for one.

If you have any questions I'd be happy to talk. Just let me know.

Regarding the sports pass. They don't make them available to you through Howdy until your registration day. When you register, there will be advisers and students in the room to help with the process. They will help you out.

I've been told that they expect to sell out of sports passes this year (for the first time ever?). So things may be a little different this year. But in the past, they always set aside a chunk of passes for Sea Aggies.

I am currently about to graduate with a Marine Transportation degree from TAMUG. I have a friend that graduated with this same degree and is making $720/day driving offshore supply vessels in the gulf right now. He works 28 days on and has 14 days off. This comes out to around $175k a year. Tell me about somebody making that kind of money in their first year removed from main campus.
