Being sent to Galveston after graduating and have never been. Any advice on where to live or to avoid? Appreciate it

now that IKE took away the public housing it seems to be much safer. I don't know of many people on the mainland who strive to live in galveston. Try to find a place on the west side.

Many good areas of town to live. Depends what you like to do.
East end is older, historic houses if you like them
Strand/downtown is near the harbor, restaurants, etc. can walk around
Mid town area is more like "regular houses"
West end is canals & beaches, not behind the Seawall.

Talk to some people before committing to anywhere as just a few blocks one way or the other can make a difference.

I live in Fish Village on the east end (very close to the ferry) and really like this neighborhood.

"on the mainland" is a big place.
I don't know many people in Galveston who would be excited about moving to LaMarque or Texas City either.

taint the only place. Usually when we speak of the mainland it means north Galveston county.
The "vernibles" moved to LM and TC and brought their chillrens wid dem.

Ain't Public Housing great?

The east side has better restaurants, shopping, nightlife, ethnic diversity, and more of a full-time feel. The west side is much quieter. I live on the west side but raise hell out east. Most people would probably tell you the same thing. Choosing where to live is highly personal, you really need to look at both and decide what is more important to you. It's one island but two very different ways of living.

Being close to the Strand has its perks

I used to live on the west end. It was nice and quiet but so far from everything. We were really happy when we moved to the midtown area and were closer to work and closer to everything in general. But now that I have kids I sometimes find myself thinking about moving again because although my neighbors are all nice, there is a lot of crime in the area.

Grew up in Texas City, if you have to live in that heat/humidity, live on the beach in Galveston. Rent a condo with a view and enjoy it. If you get another hurricane, you only have to pack and run!
The good thing about Ike is it cleaned up the place.
