Does anyone have any incite on this plan? Going to Glaveston for a year, and then switching majors into A&M college station. Did you like it? Was it a good experience? What are the advantages to this? Is the campus/school nice? Any info would be great! Thanks a lot! GIGEM!

I did it... spent most every weekend in the Fall up in College Station and then transferred into an engineering program at the end of my Freshman year. The reality is I took a lot of the advantages Galveston offers for granted until I actually got to College Station. The easily accessible small classes... professors that actually know you... etc. After a few years in College Station I decided that engineering wasn't the best career path for me and couldn't transfer into Mays Business thus back to Galveston I went. That ended up being the best decision I made.

You can't beat College Station for what it is... sports, bars, the fun of living in a true college town BUT there are some distinct advantages that Galveston has over the main campus. I think Galveston is great place to spend your freshman year developing good habits before jumping into the mad house that is the big campus/ridiculous class sizes that you will find in CS. They also get access to better Football tickets than their freshman counterparts in CS! Not a bad perk. My 2 cents.

Graduated from TAMUG, I have plenty of friends who planned to transfer and never did or they transferred and came back.

If you don't transfer and didn't pick a major like marine biology, upon you'll likely have a job lined up before you graduate. A maritime degree is very appealing to maritime companies simply because not many people have them.

I typically get 10 emails a week from the school about about job openings within the industry.

Didn't go up to CS much, I worked 30-40 hours all through college. When I did go up there my freshman year, I was on 1st deck at 50 yd line.

Honestly, I didn't go to CS enough to give a proper comparison.

I never lived on campus so I can't tell you what that's like but they just built two more dorm halls which seem nice.

You'll learn your way around the strand if you enjoy drinking, it's also pretty cheap to drink here once you memorize which bars are having their specials.

You pretty much have drinking and the beach as things to do (all I did at least), otherwise you'll want to leave the island. Houston isn't a far drive

Lost my first job out after grad 8 months later due to the fact that they shut the whole company down... jumped on Kens list again and had a new one within weeks. I have now been there 9+ years. I am still in contact with a few of the profs and run into people in the maritime industry I graduated with all the time. Nice little A&M Galveston network.

I work for a shipping company that specializes in heavy lift and project cargo

My son went to TAMUG and could have transferred. Chose to stay he liked it so much. Worked in Shanghai for 6 years, is class of 07 and has a great job at the port of Houston. TAMUG helped me get out of China and back to work in the States. Great experience. He was even a yell leader.

Good school! It's A&M's best kept secret. You get to pull from the best seats for football games. I was on first deck all four years. I went to transfer but stayed instead. Small school so you aren't treated as a number. Graduated as an engineer and got my first job within two weeks of graduating. The marine industry is money! Best opportunities out there that many look over.

I was there in 95-96. If they had offered my major, I would have stayed. Loved that campus. Get to know Dr. Donna Lang from day one. She is the best student advocate in the TAMU System. Stay through the summer and try to take a cruise if you can. It is an unbelievably cheap way to see the world.
