So, my daughter wants to go to TAMU CC in the fall of 2016. My wife and I have thought of eventually ending up on North Padre Island to finish out my career and retire there. Just wondering if buying a condo on North Padre Island and her driving to TAMU CC campus every day is a realistic option. She could take on a couple of room mates to offset the mortgage.

We are going to be spending $700-800 a month for her to live on or off campus anyway. Anybody ever do something similar to this?

Also, look into Ingleside/Aransas Pass/Rockport areas. You might get more bang for your buck in those places. About a 40 min commute to TAMUCC.

If it were my daughter, I'd want her to live on campus at least for two years so she could get her feet on the ground, meet people, and not have to worry about commuting and finding a parking space every day.

I know TAMUCC is really putting a lot of resources into on campus housing and student life. Might as well take advantage of it.

Live on campus for a couple years then buy on north padre. I had a number of friends that lived on the island and drove in. Its not a bad drive though thwr can be extravtraffic due to the NAS during rush hour. Also knew people wgo deove in from Rockport and Sinton but those are way to far for college commuting imo.

I don't think you will go wrong either way. There is convenience is living on campus, but it is your money and not a bad idea to find a place off campus. Like you said, you have to pay the money anyways. Maybe she could even find roommates to cover all of the mortgage.

Don't buy on the island. Quite aside from hurricanes, the access to the mainland is limited and is fixing to get worse. The campus would be best for a couple of years

I liked living on the island. I would tell her to live in the dorms for the first year as well.
