My family and I are taking a mini vacation to this area next week. Is it safe to get in the water right now?

If you have open sores and or immuno compromised, then I would stay out. If not, then enjoy the water. If you do develope a rash or reddness that ain't right, get yourself to an ER pronto.

I think this stuff has been overblown by the media a bit due to severity of the outcome. Although rare, still good to take precautions, no going in water w/ cuts, etc. if you get cut while in water clean w/ Hibiclens really well and if any changes such as swelling , redness, etc. go to ER immediately.
