Anybody know how this town is living-wise? My brother got a chemical engineering internship there with BASF this summer and was wondering if anybody had any comments about the good or bad.

I live in Galveston & occasionally drive thru Freeport--not much there unless you like to fish and do other water related things

Do Not live there. Live in Lake Jackson, Clute, or Brazoria. Lots of drugs and other issues in Freeport. But for lunch go to On The River Restaurant.. My Brother in Law owns it. Good Food.

Gimme a cow pie and fries...

In general, Lake Jackson is the best in that area.
Freeport ain't the ghetto, but I wouldn't mark it as a low crime area either.

My parents bought a bay house in Freeport about a year ago and absolutely love it. No instances of crime whatsoever. I believe the comments are geared towards what would be considered inner city freeport, which would equate to any inner city.

Freeport has a pop. of 13k. There is no "inner city". That bay house has to be out towards Surfside, probably over by the Yacht Club. I wouldn't call that "in Freeport", although it probably technically is.

Freeport is a hell-hole. It's worth the ten minute commute to live in Clute or Lake Jackson.

Here is a nice place to live in Lake Jackson. Live in Lake Jackson and fish out of Surfside.

i live in clute, which is right next door to freeport(don't live in freeport, clute or lake jackson are both much better). there is stuff to do if you like the outdoors but there is no nightlife to speak of in the area. with the exception of a few crappy ones. i fish, golf, wakeboard, cycle, and brew beer for entertainment so there is stuff you can do, it just has to be outside during the day stuff for the most part. making friends is hard because most of the area is filled with middle aged families or old people, a lot of the young people are idiots who graduated high school but never left the area and still living in the memories of high school. all in all not a bad place to live.

Stay in Lake Jackson, Angleton or Brazoria.

I grew up in Lake Jackson (live in Katy now). The only reason I ever went to Freeport was for Brazoswood football games and HS graduation. That was back in the mid-1980s. From what I've heard from family still living in Angleton and Lake Jackson, Freeport has only gotten worse since I lived there.

Definitely live in Lake Jackson or Angleton. Besides, everything is so close - you can get to Freeport in about 15 - 20 minutes.

Ananth - I'm from Lake Jackson. Talk to me on AIM.

Wow, didn't realize there were so many Ags from around there!

I currently work for BASF. The plant is technically in Freeport. It is on the Freeport - LJ border. Tell him to get a place in LJ.
If he has a social life, he might want to consider living closer to Houston and making the drive.
I do it from Pearland every day. It is not that bad of a drive.

People in Clute are crying about the lack of respect.

not really, if you haven't been to the area lately you probably don't know that there is a relatively new little subdivision in clute that is pretty nice. the houses are new and range from about 140k to 250k so they are in younger folks price range. saying that, there are quite a few younger people to hang out with around here as opposed to lake jackson where the nice subdivisions' residents look like they escaped from an assisted living complex.

I know three of the families that moved into that subdivision. They moved out of Lake Jackson, too.

I agree with the living in LJ part. Freeport hasn't been anything to speak of in 50 years now and you can drive from one end of the entire area to the other in about 45 minutes. There are some good apartments along 332 by the hospital and closer to Plantation as well. About the only thing to do in town for night life is Rickochet's and a couple of pool halls. There is a ****ty club near Angleton (I forget the name now, it's off of 288 B), but for anything else of that nature you drive to Clear Lake or Houston. Once I moved out of the area I realized it's not all that great, but it's not all that bad of a place to live either.

I did two summer internships at BASF while I was in college. I also grew up in Lake Jackson (Brazoswood class of '98).

The Clute/LJ/Freeport is a nice area but not exactly known for the things 20-something's usually want. I've known ChemE's that lived closer to Houston and made the commute to Freeport everyday. But, seeing as he's only doing an internship, you can't go wrong with living in LJ.

Freeport is getting better now that they are fixing it up, but LJ is a much nicer place. I'm from Clute, it's right in between the 2.

I went to a football game at Hopper Stadium in Freeport last fall. Looks like they're fixing up the main drag through town.
