Got a job with the Department of Veterans Affairs. So...where does a 23 year old go to live in Waco? I'm guessing near Baylor. What's there to do? How does Waco compare to CS? Pretty much any info on Waco please

Looking for apartment or house? Own or rent? I'm guessing somebody your age is looking for an apartment.

The new apartments near Central Texas Marketplace look nice.

Looking for a furnished apartment if at all possible

I wouldn't live too close to Baylor. It isn't the best of neighborhoods. At your age, I would look at some of the new downtown lofts/apartments.

I'm not going to be too picky as to where I live because I'm not sure how long I'll be in Waco.

I was looking on Craigslist for a sublease, and found a furnished apt at The Grove Apartments on University Parks. I know it's going to be all students living there, but meh...I'm 23

daughter has a 1/1 over by Baylor that is very nice but unfurnished...she would be willing to sublease it to you until her lease is up in May...that way you could look around before you sign a 12 month obligation.

It is Regency Square Condominimums and rent is about $600. The living area, dining room and kitchen and half bath are all downstairs and the bedroom and bath are upstairs. TONS of closet/storage space. I think you can look them up through Brothers Management for pictures. If you are interested she can post more info if you leave a contact email.

Thanks for the help, but I really need a furnished apartment. I'm not really sure how long I'll be in Waco because I plan to keep looking around for jobs. Thanks for looking out though!

I would check out the new lofts in down town first. I would also check the area around Baylor even though the area is not the best in the world.
I would not live in Woodway/Hewitt if you like to go out. The new apartments by the Central Texas Market place are nice including the ones by Cotton Wood Golf Course.

The nightlife in Waco is there if you know where to look.

The drive from Hewitt to downtown isn't bad. A lot of my coworkers and I do that a few times a week. We work down in McGregor though, so it makes more sense to shave time off the work trip and tack it on to the nightlife trip.

Thanks guys. I'm not sure if I can afford a loft, and again, the place needs to be fully furnished (washer/dryer, fridge, furniture, tv, etc).

Since I'll be working for the government as a recent grad, I'm not going to be making much. 39k to be exact. I'd like to keep the rent around or below 600 if at all possible.

Right now, I've found a place called Heritage Quarters to sublease for $475 with all utilities paid and fully furnished. It's at 215 Washington Ave.

215 Washington????

I thought those were for students? Good possibility for you though if you can get in.

Heritage quarters is a pretty nice place. Lots of fun stuff to do in that area.

Yea, it's for students. Most of the furnished places in Waco are student housing places, which really isn't a big deal to me. I guess the question is, do I have to be a student to live there?

If they don't let you live there, I would think that would be housing discrimination (illegal).

You don't have to be a student to live anywhere in the area.

I honestly thought it was private student housing kind of like Callaway House, just farther from campus...probably ought to check into that.

I know non BU students who live but of course check anything first.

That's 2-3 miles away from heritage quarters, on the other side of I-35, Baylor, and 77. What does it have to do with the safety at heritage quarters?

SERIOUSLY, that is a federally funded housing project next to the pauper cemetery and no one in THAT neighborhood goes to Baylor!

Waco has a hard enough time with its image as it is so NO HELP LIKE THIS NEEDED!

You need to live in Behern's Loft or Holiday Hammonds Lofts. They give you PLENTY of room (i.e. my loft was a little over 1,000 sq ft).

Seriously those are the only 2 places I would recommend somebody living in Waco.

The rest are just text book definition of TRASHY and GHETTO!

Waco is scary so you need to watch out.

Went to visit Tuesday. Similar to B/CS...if the A&M campus was in Bryan. I only visited the area around campus. I wish I had taken more time to look around, but I don't know the area at all. Waco isn't TOO bad...but it definitely isn't Houston/Dallas/Austin/San Antonio...or even College Station

The Baylor area used to have a slum almost across the street but over the last 30 years it is mainly apartments and student housing.
There is a residential area where old profs live that will soon be razed for new campus expansion as well as housing for students.

BQ...you remember the old Kirk-Wilson school?
All those nice homes in the Guitard area are the ones they are going to raze eventually.

Sorry Mom, I don't. Grandpa died in 1979 and I haven't really been back since, other than a drive through the neighborhood once every 10 years or so just to see what it looks like now. I know his old house doesn't exist anymore. They've converted a lot of those old properties into places for the Bobby & Betty Baylors to live.

Yeah, if it was 79 then you wouldn't know anything about it...maybe your family but the restoration of the area began about early 80s.

There were some very dilapidated and vacant homes, crack houses by today's vernacular. The school was originally an elementary in WISD. Then it became a special ed school for all WISD children. In the early/mid 70s Baylor bought the property(when all the children were sent to regular campuses) and it became a lab/day care for their early childhood education programs. I believe it was in the Dutton/Cooper corner and that eventually became the location of the Truett Seminary.

FWIW, if you would like to come back to Waco before your move here, I will meet you someplace and then take you around different areas...it is so much easier to see things when you aren't the driver!

Mom. Appreciate the offer, but I'm in Waco pretty regularly (once a year usually). Regularly enough anyway. I just don't get back to where my Grandpa used to live (near Baylor), or where my dad grew up (North 16th near the old Providence Hospital) that often.

Barring having to take care of my parents, I don't plan to EVER move back to Waco. 3 Years of Midway School with EMY92 was plenty

okay, so here's the deal. you're honestly not going to find a "good" apartment for $600.00 a month unless you live with someone. my brother just got an apartment and I helped him scout the area. Saddlebrook is where my brother lives and it's a pretty respectable and safe complex. It's not near downtown or Baylor, but it's close to fast food restaurants, nice restaurants, HEB, Wal-Mart, and a few bars and in a safe area. Also, I'm not sure if you're working at the VA, but it's fairly close to the VA Hospital.
