To those who are familiar with her performance thus far, what kind of letter grade would you give her...

I'm trying to figure out if she knows what she is doing...

i don't know too much... but her comments/non-comments during the "art program" discussion didn't help with the general populace.

What did she say about it c-jags? We got quite a few emails about it, but we had something going on that day. Probably something with track.

Bad School Board
Bad Superintendent
Bad Head Football Coach

I'm amazed Temple is holding on to any kind of decent reputation when they have this kind of ineptitude of leadership...

The Glory Days are gone...

But, a change in leadership can make things better...

Outstanding programs for the top kids--the best in the area.

Excellent men's basketball coach apparently.

It is NOT a bad district, but people do have remember the demographics of the town, or of most towns in Texas for that matter, are simply not the same they were twenty years ago.

No one seems to have a magic potion for low income, absent parents, socially deprived, and non English speaking students. That is the growing situation in most districts that are NOT high income enclaves.

Waco and Killeen have many of the same factors.

SoT, here was the article I'm thinking of

http://www.tdtnews.com/story/2010/03/03/64583

quote:
If students would come to school on a regular basis, schools wouldn't be in the shape they're in, Temple Superintendent Robin Battershell told a group of people concerned about cuts to the Fine Arts Department.

Slow growth and an average daily attendance of 92.6 percent leads to stagnant state funding, she said.

"Attendance here is poor," Battershell said. "The kids don't come to school like they should."

Tuesday night, she faced a group of about 70 people to answer questions about cuts to arts programs.

"I don't like rumors and I don't like gossip," Battershell said. "I'm here to address questions you may have, although we may not be able to address them specifically."

3GA, I agree with your sentiments, Temple faces some hard demographics and factors. I think that the leadership has taken hits for the way they handle things and their response to criticism and questions. Maybe fairly... maybe not. Not answering specific questions doesn't help.

Just my outsider's perspective.

I think the kids in Temple ISD are Above
Average...

I just think the Leadership is not good at all....

Actually, the demographics of the state would surprise MANY, and Temple ISD is like most of us away from the rich enclaves like Salado.

Here is factual information from TEA.

Temple ISD has two out of three students minority.
Ethnic Distribution: African American 28.8%
Hispanic 35.2%
White 34.1%
Two out of three are Economically Disadvantaged.

Economically Disadvantaged

Six percent have little or no English.

Limited English Proficient (LEP) 6.9%

I did not cut and paste the entire page, but over HALF are also "At Risk." This is a blanket term for many situations that greatly reduce the probability of a student actually graduating from high school

Given that, Temple does a very good job with these kids and most of the At Risk students do graduate.

I am NOT saying that problem demographics mean problem kids. I AM saying that we have a school system crafted to the needs of the middle class/upper middle class/ white child. When public schools were starting those were the kids who actually went to school. Now we educate everyone, but the system if just NOT AS Effective with these groups that I mentioned. I am a HUGE believer that Ruby Payne's work fits these kids better than our current system.

And for those outside of Westlake or similar communities, these are demographics that are skyrocketing in Texas Schools.

So whine all you want to about the kids who don't speak English, or whose parents are in prison, or whose family is homeless. THESE are the kids we are called to educate. And these are the kids who need us the most.

I am still undecided on the superintendent personally. I have been told by many people that have been associated with her throughout her career that she is an extremely intelligent person though, so I am more than willing to giver her a chance.

I am very impressed with the job the new boy's basketball coach, Tim Thomas, has done. I saw them play in early January and was not impressed with any of their players as individual parts, so for them to make the run they did is extremely impressive. They made it to the Regional finals with out a Division I prospect on the team. That is tough to do in ANY region at ANY level. They also knocked off at least two highly ranked teams on the way.

I am VERY dissappointed with the head football coach. I've seen them play a couple of games each season over the last couple of years and have seen a team that is poorly prepared, does not make adjustments throughout the game when needed, etc. not to mention a gross waste of talent when it comes to a player the caliber of Lache Seastrunk. The kid was a top two recruit in the nation, and he got about 10-12 touches a game and they were all in traffic. The kid has world class speed. Get him the ball in space and let him use his athleticism to make people miss and put the ball in the end zone. However he has graduated so this is a mute/useless arguement now. I haven't watched any of the subvarsity competition so I don't know if they have any talent coming or not, but would think a school the size of Temple would have at least a couple of really good players year in and year out.

The school board has attempted to run the district here in Temple for years, and that has got them into much of the poor situations that it is in. I do believe that Dr. Battershell is working to correct the overbearing board along with the other issues in the district along education lines. (Not sure she is addressing any issues in the athletic department at this time).

As 3rd said above, Temple's demographics have changed dramatically from what they were 20 years ago, along with the demographics across most places in the state (excluding areas like Westlake, Hyde Park, and smaller areas like Academy and Salado in this region). There are a really high number of non-english speakers and low income students in the Temple school system. Temple is still struggling with these students, although their teachers are giving it everything they have to get these students to be successfully academically. The effort is there by those employed by the district. I'm not sure there is support by the community as a whole though.

anyways, just my two cents on several of the issues above in this thread...

boom. great analysis. spot on.

First and foremost, God bless all our educators.

That all being said. i love working for Belton ISD. I say that not to rub anything in the face of TISD people. I know i've traded a few barbs about the rival schools, but i hope everybody knows that it's in fun. I take a ton of pride in Temple ISD.

In being here a year I've seen the difference between the districts. Honestly they both have great students, great educators and great administrations.... but the community support is night and day different. BISD is far from perfect, but it has a unified community and a School Board that supports the Admin and doesn't meddle. It seems like TISD doesn't get that luxury. I could be way off but that's just how I've seen it. It also seems like the TDT doesn't like TISD a ton... which may be one of the worst factors. The article I posted above leaves a lot to the imagination and not in Battershell's favor....

I know the teachers don't get enough thanks... but be you at Belton, Temple, Salado, Rogers, Troy, Academy, Killeen, wherever... thank you for working in the trenches and caring about kids. I'm small potatoes at the admin level, but I appreciate what y'all do.

speaking of which...... Dr. Baker at Belton ISD announced her retirement last night at the school board meeting

i was there and definitely was surprised.

I've heard this has been coming for some time. While she is leaving the district in great shape, there are some tough decisions that lay ahead of whoever replaces her, such as when to build a second high school to ease the overcrowding....

With 42 years she would be losing money by working. She will retire with 100% of her best three years average!

she does leave the district in great shape i think. i'm not sure if they will hire from within, but i think all the people that they would bring up from within will keep with the same attitude and culture.

fortunately we have already made some strong plans about the expansion of the district and are moving on those currently. BISD will be alright.

Recent TISD superintendents:

Pam Harrison, Interim (June 2004-November 2004)
Pam Harrison (November 2004-December 2005)
Robert W. Denton, Interim (January 2006-June 2006)
Beto Gonzales (July 2006-August 2007)
Dana S. Marable, Interim (September 2007-May 2008)
Robin Battershell (June 2008 - present)

Lotsa turnover. What gives? Leaving for better opportunities? Snake pit? No big deal, just normal change?
