WHY? I have lived here for 50 years and have enjoyed a pretty good life. Easy to get anywhere in Texas within a couple of hours or less. Good schools, recreation, golf, restaurants and people, without the big city hassel. I can go to a Mavs, Cowboys, Rangers and A&M games and be home before most who live in the city. So give me your reasoning as to why it sucks!

Are you sure you live in Waco.....not one of the suburbs. I have never heard good schools and WISD mentioned together.

Waco has good schools but you sent your kids to private? How do you reconcile that? Unless you meant Waco has good private schools, in which case what's the point?

Waco HAD areas of good schools until all students were mixed and bused to achieve Lord only knows what! Richfield and Waco High over University and Jefferson-Moore

A prime example is found in the breakdown of Methodist Home children in the 1970s. If a child was musically inclined they were routed to Lake Air Jr and Richfield, if they were athletic they went to Waco Hi maybe Richfield if they were athletic AND studious! Otherwise they were divided between all of WISD schools...some being bussed all the way to Viking Hills Elem.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Waco, other than that den of jackasses on the brazos. I just was puzzled about the "good schools" but we sent our kids to private schools conflict. The residential area between Franklin and Waco dr., and north of valley mills is nice.

I live in China Spring and Waco's night life may need some more improvement. But overall great place to live with lots of new industry, business, development, and recreation. Waco in the past 10 years according to TEXAS A&M RECON magazine (Real Estate Center publishes), "has been in the top 10 strongest growth areas USA and number 2 in Texas" Waco has yet to fall under the 5% mark of expansion growth. So in due time Waco will be a much more important city on the Texas Map. I am also thoroughly impressed with all the people that have been doing the revitalization of Downtown. Looks great!!

I for one attended Waco High graduated in 2003 and was part of the AP/Athens program. This education served me far better than some my classmates in college so before you go knocking on the school system take a look at other areas in Texas.

My fiance went to Robinson and she definitely was placed at disadvantaged in college b/c she didn't have any kind of foundation of basic algebra, history, politics, etc etc, and she was in the top 10% and honors!!!.

Also I here good things about China Springs ISD and I hope it is true b/c they are taxing the **** out of me.

I'd like to see a link on that. What does "top 10 strongest growth area USA" mean? Are you saying Waco was one of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the US during that time? Or had a top 10 growth rate? What does your stat mean, and where did you get your info? Also, be honest - Does your stat include Temple-Killeen, where there REALLY is growth? And are you saying Waco was the second fastest growing city in Texas during the previous 10 years?

Sorry never meant to compare public and private. My kid went to St Louis and Reicher. I guess I was just commenting on that experience. And I have lived in NorthWest Waco around by the lake. It has been nice.

I will try to find you the article put on by this site
http://recenter.tamu.edu/..... but dont get worked up all over this. I was just stating a stat I read in a article about 6 months ago in the publishings of this org. And by the above comment I am assuming your from killeen/Temple area?

By the way I have lot do at work this week, but I promise to track down the publication. In meantime check that site and read some of the stats for yourself on their various reveiws of the areas, RECON does a really great job. And join their mailing list which they send the publications thru.

To be honest after writing this reply; I don't remember if it was Waco or Central Texas as a whole???? What I do know is I work every day in the banking industry, and I see progress and financial stability of the Waco Real Estate, Development, resi-land, and general retail sales of Waco. These values and stats in Waco have almost doubled in the past 10 years here in Waco. Land values 10 years ago have gone up astronomically and the economy here is growing ever so stronger.

I haven't seen this exact trend except around the Ft. Hood area...meaning values of various real estate types that are more than 5 miles from base or base housing (i.e.commercial C-1 thru C-3, light/heavy industrial, and R-3 thru R-6 rural resi) values have not changed significantly. Meaning that the the area as a whole is not growing stronger as fast compared than immediate areas that are the ingress and egress of Ft. Hood. Meaning you have similar but smaller version of the bubble affect that was in Atlanta(might I add that heart of the bubble was around a large US military installation.) You have focused land sales and development in one area and land speculation outside of this area b/c of the intensity in the immediate area. Well I wont go into further detail b/c I am sure you know how Atlanta Real Estate market turned out.

Waco has the problem that many small towns are suffering from. Aside from a small professional class, you have a plethora of meth cooking-welder-types, baby-factories & and low-end service sector providers. The youth that go to college leave town and never come back, akin to Hal Ketchum's Small Town Saturday Night. The old money is dying off and their wealth is being destroyed by the worthless 2nd or 3rd generations. As a native Wacoan, the fact that Waco is now the 5th poorest Metro/MSA in Texas is depressing.
