Sounds like the type of mess that could only happen in Waco. And at one of the only decent family restaurants in town.

I wonder if the other parties seated before the family with a child in a wheelchair were seated at tables or booths?

It would be hard to set a wheelchair st s booth.

I wonder if is was miscommunication. Perhaps what they said is they were waiting for a wheelchair accessible spot and it just came out wrong.

There are some places you flat can't put a wheelchair.

Ahh, you misquoted me. I said this sounds like the kind of mess that could only happen in Waco. By "mess," I mean everyone talking about it (on Facebook apparently), which led to the local news doing a story without interviewing anyone on camera, which led to them doing another story. Not to mention the family getting lawyered up, and add in plenty of idiots on the KWTX web site saying they will never eat at Cheddar's again even though I think we still don't know what the hell went on or why.

Long article in today's Tribulation....Cheddar's totally screwed up this one! Thanks to ADA rules there is a strong case against the manager so they will have to suck it up. Lots of witnesses apparently and they are all calling in!!!! Only thing worse than your child being in a wheelchair is that child being treated unfairly to boot!

The positive side of a sleezeball attorney being involved, is the publicity.

I had to deal with my mom prior to the days of ADA and accessibility........try taking someone in a wheelchair to an un-airconditioned bathroom before stalls had minimum widths, narrow exterior doors. I know the hassles of restaurants with booths only and then not allowing a wheelchair in the aisle so we had to get her into the booth and her paralyzed on one side.

I had a similar experience at the Wings in More on University in College Station. It was on a football game weekend and I was with my parents (my mom is in a wheelchair). Of course they were packed.

The hostess led us to the very back corner table by the restrooms which took about 5 minutes to get there. Several people had to get out of their chairs and move in order for us to pass by. We passed many empty tables along the way and when I asked why we could take one of them, the hostess just said back here would be better.

By the time we reached our table my mom was in tears because of how frustrating it was to navigate through the restaurant and having people stare at us.

Anyway I could go in to more detail but the bottom line is restaurants could do a better job being more sensitive to the needs of their patrons.

mel, ABSOLUTELY! That is the deal with Cheddars...it was Mother's Day and this Mom deals with her child in a wheelchair, 24/7..........treat the child specially and they would have lifelong customers...make an issure of this child and that mom will own Cheddars or put them out of business!

Just curious, assuming this happened, what are the damages? How much cash should this kid and his lawyer get for this insensitivity and accompanying multi-minute delay?

Again, just curious.

Personally, I think a public apology should be issued but to do that, the family would have to be named. Maybe open the restaurant one weekend meal for handicapped citizens and a guest and comp the meals.........a gesture of understanding.

Litigation to me should be holding someone liable and them admitting responsibility. However, no one else feels that way and most only listen to dollar signs.

Latest news is that the manager has been fired.

it will all work out like it should. The parents will sue Chedders and so will the fired GM. Typical closure. If the parents get a settlement, it should go into that kids college fund or something like that. He was the one that was hurt....not the parents.

that's wrong piag, the kid is 4 and didn't have a clue that he was being overlooked intentionally....the parents were hurt and angered but their attorney is using the child for the sympathy factor!

the parents just want money. If they just wanted "what's right to be done", then the GM getting fired should have been enough. Take your settlement and invest in your child. I am sure they use it to buy a new car or something.....typical

I know the parents personally. This could not be more wrong. The community they live in has really back them through all the trials they have endured over the past few years. Everyone in the town know their son. They did no even approach a lawyer but rather a close friend send out a email to coworkers and friends explaining what had happen in an effort to boycott Cheddars. The email was forward on to numerous people including jim dunnam. Dunnam offered to take the case.

I have read the initial email. What happened would be on par with a restaurant only serving you in the back because of the color of your skin.

Also, the issue was not created due to only booths being available.

No offense, but you seem to be rather biased in this case, ThemApples.

I don't pretend to know what the right answer is. I do know that if I personally knew the folks, I'd be saying the same things you are, whatever that means.

I think what happened is terrible, but to say they didn't want to sue, then all of a sudden get a change of heart because an attorney contacts them is a joke. They see dollar signs. Ask them if they are planning on starting a college fund or help invest in rehab for the boy with their "winnings". Plus, all a lawsuit is going to do (other than make the family some $$) is bring more attention to the boy and the family.

I contemplated sending this out.  I decided I must.

This past Sunday the family, a former student and player of mine, along with his family went to Cheddars.  The father and his wife have a young son who has a spinal condition that has relegated him to a wheelchair.

They arrived around 3:00 p.m.  They were told the wait would be approximately 12 minutes.  After about 30 minutes, and after multiple parties who came in after them were seated, the mother approached the hostess and manager to make sure their name was still on the list.  He told them it was.

After another 15 minutes and numerous other parties being seated ahead of them, she again approached the manager.  This time he became belligerent and told them they were still trying to find them a table.  The mother asked why others who obviously came in after them were being seated before them.  The manager (who is now raising his voice for all to hear) told her that the wheelchair son was in would block the aisles and that only able-bodied patrons could be seated at this time until the crowd subsided.

She turned around and asked her husband if he heard what the man just said.  The husband did hear it, but asked him to repeat it.  The guy came from around the stand, threw up his arms and repeated what he told them, again raising his voice.  The manager offered to show the mother how the chair would block the aisles.  She told him he did not need to show her.  The father said at this time his wife began to cry.  The manager told them that if this was not satisfactory, they could leave, and if they kept making a scene, he would be forced to call the police.

The father asked for his name.  The manager refused to give it to him, saying he could get it at Cheddars.com.  He asked for the two hostess' names and the manager told him they were available online as well.  At this time, the manager picked up the phone and called the police.  The father gathered his family and left.  He said the other folks waiting for a table were literally dumbfounded by the manager's actions.  Many of them left as well.

I just spoke to the father and have tried to make sure this recount is as accurate as possible.  I realize how hard this is to believe.  In this day and age, that someone could be so blatantly inconsiderate is really quite unfathomable.  I am sickened by it.

What you do with this information is up to you.  I just thought everyone I know should here this story

Here is the original email with out the names involved. As I stated above this is what got the attention started.

You can call me bias all you want but that does not make the actions correct.

A buddy of mine went in with a disabled child about a year ago and they were also seated a long time after numerous folks that came in after them. He was told it was policy, same as in this situation.

Ugh...if it transpired like the email said, that's just sickening. The worst part of it to me, was the manager's reaction. I have no problem believing a manager would act like that, especially during a busy time like Mother's Day. But that doesn't excuse it. He needs to remember he's in a SERVICE industry, and these people he is berating are the ones that pay his salary. It's his JOB to service these people. I'm glad the SOB got fired.

I have to wonder, if he'd just told the family up front "I'll be happy to seat you guys as quickly as possible, but please understand that there will be limited seating options available," would they have been more understanding?

Common sense is dead these days.

The now former general manager of the Waco Cheddar’s Casual Café, Sean Wheeler, confirmed Wednesday in a phone interview that he was fired over an incident on Mother’s Day in which the parents of a wheelchair-bound 4-year-old boy were told they had to wait for a table, even as other customers were seated ahead of them.

Wheeler said he feels he was terminated unfairly, but declined further comment.

Maybe Wheeler can contact Jim Dunnam too.....
