I work about 2 blocks from downtown Belton and just now drove around and saw all the changes and upgrades.

- A new coffee shop, Bodago Bean, the Mrs. says it's great.
- Yogurt shop at the old cotton gin called the weigh station
- new mexican food right off of nolan creek opens up next Monday
- sasparilla saloon restaurant
- the beltonian has been purchased and there is an alcoholic beverage application on the door now. hoping an alamo draft house sort of setup
- i've also heard rumors of somebody wanting to start a tubing business down nolan creek right by the downtown area.

Great to see somebody attempt to make it better. I hope it pans out.

I also hope somebody decides to put some money into downtown temple and make it a more happening scene. There are some great restaurants, but seems like there is still a long way to go.

Tell me about the saloon? Is it a bar and grill or just an eating place?

it was just a sandwich shop in the front of peacock archery. they finally opened up there in July i believe and is just a deli type place.... Belton needs more of a beer joint though.

The Mexican food place is Corona's de oro, same as the version in Temple near S&W.

Bodega Bean is pretty cool, but seems a little pricey. Not many people in there, but I hope it will pick up when school (UMHB) starts up again.

The bodago bean is good, but is chick food for chick appetites. Not cheap, either.

I heard the same thing about Nolan creek. I personally think you'd have to be drunk, crazy, or both to get in that water.

I am curious to see what they are going to do with the Beltonian.

What all will be at the old cotton gin besides the yogurt shop?

What is an Alamo draft house? A bar? That would be cool. Is Belton non-smoking?

Alamo is a cool place, based outta Awstin. Movie house that serves food & bev's while you watch the flicks

The Alamo I knew in downtown Awstin, would host off the wall flicks, sometimes with a narrative host or special guest commentators

The Bodega Bean - I know the guy who opened it, he's a local, and is a really good person

The Beltonian was already like an Alamo Draft House... but only had 1 theater and I am sure outdated.

Belton is getting a new Movie Theater soon over behind the Walgreens off of 317.

Having lived in Belton for the past 16 years, I'm glad to see the renovations that are taking place. I'm also interested in what's going into the former Beltonian. They did not serve alcohol so it was not like a draft house. Also, their food was disgusting. As for the other theatre plans behind Walgreens...when is this supposed to happen? I have not seen anything in the paper as far as plans.

Well, I didn't mean good food and beer... just that it had eating food and watching movies combined into one event.

I agree, I hope it does become MORE LIKE an Alamo Draft House.

The movie theater is in the beginning phase of planning, so it is at least a year or so away I would think.

Just an FYI, Weigh Station Yogurt is the cration of a very recent A&M grad. He graduated in either May or August. He is a super stand up young man. I'm pretty positive is father is the main reason for renovating DT Belton that this thread was started about. The entire family are Aggies which makes me hope for thier success a little more!

JPB - any more info on the movie theater? Is it a chain theater? # of screens? I wonder who is the architect?

i was LITERALLY the last person they let down 2nd today. the cops did a u-turn behind me and shut down the street.

hope the new business make it through this. sucks to see so much hard work done and washed away.

wow - those pictures are incredible. makes me feel like i am back in houston with all the flooding. i hope everyone is able to get back up and running in no time.

just drove down main from behind and the waters were back down by coronas de oro and the weigh station.

would hate for those brand new businesses to get hit this quick.

The Downtown Belton and Bodega Bean Scoop:
- Bodega Bean started construction and opened its doors before the gin and ice cream shop started construction
- Bodega Bean was opened by a couple of Ag fans who have lived in the area for the past 14 or so years
- While their portions are big, they're working on that "chick food" portion of the menu. Keep the faith, fellas.
- Have to disagree on the pricing comment. Bodega Bean is very competitive for what you receive. Several fast food chains in the area are much more expensive and all the Bodega ingredients are fresh.
- Bodega also has live music every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and rotating art shows, so definitely different than what you'll find in the area.
- hear the ice cream place is pretty good.
- the movie theater is rumored to be an up and coming comedy club. We'll see...

I hope it all works out for Belton. I drove through some neighborhoods around Lake Belton when I was in Central Texas back in July. I could definitely see myself settling around Lake Belton.

Out of curiosity, why did downtown Belton flood? I know, heavy rain, duh. Apart from my knowledge of Cowhouse Creek based on my time spent at Fort Hood, I'm not as familiar with the rivers around Belton as I am with the rivers around Waco. Was there excess discharge from the dam on Lake Belton, or Stillhouse Hollow? I'd hate to see this happen again.

Nolan Creek, which flows thru downtown Belton, does not discharge from Stillhouse or Lake Belton

Nolan Creek also flooded an area Nolanville.

TV weatherman for KWTX at the time of the flood, explained that two other creeks flow into Nolan. If it were not for the Leon River, it almost could be called a river itself.

He also pointed out, that there is a 300 feet drop from the areas west of Belton, to Belton. Just on the east side of I-35 is a large horseshoe in the creek, causing water in low lying areas to back up (into downtown Belton)

of course, we had something like 12" of rain in a short time

A few daze later, it was sad to drive down Central Ave, many businesses closed

I was pleasantly surprised last Friday, when I went to Schoepf's BBQ, they had reopened after one week of being shut down.

Picked up a large family pack,

Rufus (my 3 year old, 90 lb Boxer), and I headed with the grub to College Station to see our friends, and go to Kyle for the FIU game.

It was great, being with friends, eating top notch BBQ, all of us getting free 48 yard line tickets,...

then they kicked off,...

but the missus is and we went the other night for a cupcake (they have killer cupcakes) and tea. jerrod johnson was doing live music and it was a fun night i had to admit.

the guy who owns/runs weigh station is an aggie and a belton local.

just wanted to chime in with that.

they have some awesome froyo. the cupcake is good.
