New wine bar next to the old (?) Green Room Grille (which I guess is closed for good since the owner couldn't pay his bills). Anyway, good selection, nice atmosphere. Wife and I really enjoyed it. Seems to beat the pants off the Grape and Uncorked. We will go back.

I liked this place as well. I know the family that opened this place. Son is an Aggie.

Only problem I saw was a bunch of sororitute looking Baylor kids in there. Some guy who works in there wrote this in the Trib recently:

quote:
One night I waited on a college student, which turned into two, then four and finally 12. They spent the entire night nursing one drink each. Besides doing musical chairs, which destroyed my accounting system, they each paid individually with their parent’s credit card. And each left a 50-cent tip. So basically I made $6 for two hours of work!

Waco needs the Baylor Students to spend money. Sadly, due to the decline in the economy in the bust of the late 80s, from a white collar, agricultural & manufacturing standpoint, all Waco really has to drive its economy is service oriented jobs and low-paying manufacturing stuff from Coca-Cola. Waco really used to have a lot of nice shops and restaurants to dine at that were "white table cloth" so to speak, but as the old money dries up and wages continue to fall there, it is going to be really hard to sustain that. Waco needs more College Grads to come there to perform more finance, accounting & professional-oriented careers. Such will lead to an influx in activity and drive average wages up. The problem is that what is left of the old money does not want that and will not have that. They are content with allowing pretenders to pretend that they can roll with them and work for them, while the hoi polloi slum it.

This, in a nutshell, is the thing that's most shocked me about living in the Waco area as an adult. I mean, my dad used to talk about this sort of thing, but I was a kid and didn't get it. There is a very definite class structure in Waco, with the old money at the top and a bunch of hangers on around them. It's really weird.
