Will be in Waco for the Aggie game at the Ferrell on Feb 26. Always wanted to eat at one of the Czech restaurants in West. Saw two on a web search. Any preferences / suggestions ...

Well you came to the right place:

Two choices right now really:

Czech-American - been around a long time, very good food. More "home cooking" stuff (for my money, their chicken fried steak is the best around) and some Czech specialties (cabbage rolls, sausage and kraut etc.). Good, cold beer.

Nors Burger and Sausage House - relatively new, good Aggies and Aggie fans running it. More along the lines of burgers and steaks. Very good "sausage burger," which is sausage meat shaped into a burger rather than cased. If you get it, get the sourdough jalapeno bun. Truly one of the most excellent burgers around. Really good, cold beer as well.

All in all, you can't go wrong with either choice. I know the folks who run both, and we frequent both.

What class were you Bohunk Ag? I was class of 98 and grew up in Riesel. Just wondering if you were one of the West boys we hung out with down there.

Well actually, Crusaders, "West comma Texas" is a pretty common term for us Westites. Can't count the number of times I've said West Texas and people will say something like, "So Odessa/Midland?" So it's sort of an inside joke that people now say West comma Texas.

I knew you were a good soul from some advice you gave awhile back

thanks for more here, perhaps on my next trip north, I may try your suggestions

will be traveling from Cen Tex to CS to Dallas @ the end of the month

taking Rufus, the 91 lb. wonder Boxer dog to CS, then turning the Screamin Red Demon to the north to see Joe Bonamassa in concert

at any rate, it is usually a quick gas stop & Kolaches to go @ The Czech Stop when we head north

will be flyin solo this time

Nors burgers are good, graduated with the owner in West 01 and we're both class of 05, good people. Can't go wrong with czech american either, damn I miss me some Sulaks, from back in the day when it was still in the family before it was sold several times, loved the chicken fried steak with the brown gravy and natural cut fries

Not started with a smart phone. I think punctuation marks are omitted in the title line for the thread so I typed in "comma" to lessen confusion of location. When I have mentioned West, Texas in the past to some, they think I am talking about west Texas.

Thanks to all for the responses. Probably will do Czech American just because of the more authentic Czech food. Next time will go with Nors. And, will have to make a stop at the bakery for some kolaches (poppyseed, cheese, fruit, prune)like Grandma used to make ...Hopefully they will have some left in the early afternoon. Hopefully they are open on Saturdays.

Looks like a couple of you were able to make contact after a few years of separation.

If you are going to go to a Bakery in West these days, go to Ole Czech. Best kolaches for my money these days. Right on Oak Street about a block behind Czech Stop.

Ditto Old Czech on Oak Street. Avoid all of the kolace posers on or close 35. 1/2 Bohonk myself. Grew up in Waco, but the roots trace back to Riesel, Harrison Switch, Mart & West. I ride Waco pretty hard these days and guilty of being critical of it, but it is only b/c I think it could be a great city if it wanted to be.

Had lunch today at Czech American. Enjoyed the combo plate. Stopped at the bakery on Oak (next to pizza place). Haven't sampled the kolaches yet...still too full from the cabbage roll and sausage and kraut.

I grew up in Dime Box/Lee County. Dad was Czech.

Thanks again for the suggestions for eating in West.

Post note: The kolaches were the best (tried the cream cheese and poppyseed...others beat me to the prune)...
