Do the words "Altar Call" mean anything to you?
if not, there's always "The Shame"

Not speaking from personal experience, but I'm told there are some OK places downtown. One of my buddies used to go on Thursday's to Sam's on the Square and he said it was pretty good. Hell I don't know....bars are pretty hard places to meet women anyway I've always thought.

yeah, downtown is your best bet. Salty dog use to be great, but the crowd has really thinned..

Perhaps the two concepts are mutually exclusive--social life, waco?

Austin or Fort Worth are pretty quick drives.

here's the deal...there is the student crowd that is geared toward Baylor students naturally and there is the career/young professional crowd. Unfortunately Waco has been slow to recognize the young professionals BECAUSE most of the young adults in Waco are former Baylor students who chose to stay here or had family businesses they could graduate into. It is pathetic that a city of 300,000 has such a keep it local mentality.

In recent years there have been more venues for fun activities, a swing dance group, Waco YP, Aggie Club's Howdy Hour but still think small town and where you would find activity...bars and churches...we have lots of churches and several hours.

This is a great place for rearing children but it falls short for young adults...it's better but still has needs.

Temple fits in the category of nothing much for young adults unless they grew up here and hang with their high school friends. Not just picking on Waco about that.

I'm pretty sure aggiedagger isn't looking to pick up women at the bars.

Waco isn't your typical town of 300,000. Probably because its population is actually about 124,000.

aggiedagger,

You can’t go to no bar to meet nice women you gotta go to nice places. Like a library, there's good women there. And church is good girls…or where I’m going tonight, they gonna be some fine women there tonight, good good clean girls! That’s where I’m going, *****

The 300,000 estimate included all the White people who have moved out to China Spring, Harris Creek, Robinson, Woodway, Lorena etc. And I think 300,000 is high. My guess was closer to 200,000.

Does Waco even have a library??? Also, there are a couple "bars" that you can go to for higher class people. Sure, if you go the Shame, Ch. 11, or PJ's, you'll find nada but hoodrats. But Salty, Sams, Crickets, and Diamondbacks have a better crowd. Of course, I've been married for 15 years, so WTF do I know.

Hey guys this isn't the gen board, be nice now!

I was indeed giving Metropolitan Waco the benefit of surrounding areas and yes 300K is generous but I would really think 230-240K is closer to almost, maybe exact! Remember, I was a nurse not a math major.

There are several really nice things for tourists to do in WACO the city itself, but not much for permanent residents and certainly less for young singles. Sorry, fact of life that is very slowly improving but not a great concern for city officials.

Haha! Touché!

Yes, there is actually a crapload of touristy things in Waco. And I will say Cameron Park is one of the best inner city parks I've ever seen, regardless of City size.

thanks mom, i do like cameron park.

also, as someone pointed out, i am a chick, not looking to pick up women. i realize austin and dallas and college station are all close, and while that's great and all i still want to find people in my own new crappy town so i don't have to drive hours to hang out or date.

dagger, I didn't realize you were a female...I have two daughters in town and they are active in Waco Young Professionals or YP as they call it and the Aggie Club...they meet up occasionally with friends for dinner or movies, a drink but they don't do the sleazy club scene.

YP hosts events like a tour of the mammoth site, recently the Sports Hall of Fame I think...the Christmas party was at Ridgewood Country Club this year.

If you want to post your contact info I will be happy to forward it to my daughters and maybe they know of stuff I am missing.

I think it's every Thursday, but Diamondbacks has a nice little jazz band and half price appetizers in the bar. The place is jammmed with higher end folks. Get a girlfriend and check it out.

Here's a couple of off the wall ideas:

1. Frisbee golf. Based on my oldest son's conversations there is apparently an active group of disc golfers. This can be combined with the random pick up games of ultimate frisbee (football with frisbees) that go on around Baylor.

2. Volunteer for Fuzzy Friends. They often do adoption drives at various locations such as Lowes. This combines your goal with a worthwhile charity. You can also do the Animal Shelter if you can handle the emotional stress.

To the OP, come to our Waco Aggie clubs. It's mostly people in the 20s-30s range. Second Thursday of each month, we usually mee up for a Happy hour or something. There's also Waco YP.

Why are you trying to meet people for? Friends? Dating?

For what it's worth, it's pretty difficult to consistently make it to YP or Aggie club events. They seem geared towards folks who actually get off work at 5pm.

yeah every social activity seems to be for people who get off at 5...i'm not a schoolteacher! how bout starting something at 8 pm every once in a while? i submit that we start a texags hangout that's late for the people who have non-average work hours.
