Yesterday, April 14th, I was playing in a tournement hosted by the MOAA(Military Officers Association of America)at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco in support of wounded warriors. The Freedom Isn't Free Golf tourney was hosted by the Central Texas chapter of the MOAA. This is a great organization filled with many veterans, not all Officers, as well as some active duty officers. The goal of this tourney was to help raise awareness of wounded warriors and also to help raise money for their care, as well as to raise money for scholarships for wounded warriors and their children.

The foursome I was a part of was all Soldiers from Ft. Hood's Warrior Transition Brigade. Myself and one of the other players are in the WTB. The other two players were cadre in the WTB. As I said in my subject line, we shot a 56 to win the tourney by 6 strokes. It was a scramble format using the best ball hit by a player in the foursome. We started off on the par-5 6th hole and eagled it. Starting off with an eagle was a great way to start our round. For the round, we had 2 eagles, 12 birdies, and 4 pars. Not a single bogey for the round. Me and one of the other guys were alternating killing our drives. I was nailing my fairway woods. All three of the others were deadly with their irons, and the others Soldier in the WTB only missed 2 putts the whole round. In addition to winning the tourney, we also won 5 of the prices for the individual holes. All 18 holes had some kind of prize donated by sponsors for things like longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt, etc. The team member that I was alternatating bombing drives with won one of the longest drive holes. I won closest to the pin after 2 shots on one of the par4's. One of our guys won for closest to the fairway bunker off the tee without going into the bunker. The last member of our team one two prizes: one for closest to the pin on one of the par3's, and the other prize for longest putt. The rules said that players could only win one prize, but they made an exception due to the length of the putt he sank. We wrote down 75'+ (?) on the post. The tourney officials lazed it at 101.4' when they were collecting the markers. Our best second ball on that hole was about 5" off the far end of the green and the hole location was in the front corner. Me and one of the others were thinking pitch it up close, and then short putt for birdie. The third guy in our group said he was going to putt from the fringe. Turned out to be a great decision because he read the break perfectly and his ball found nothing but the bottom of the cup. All in all, it was a great day golfing in spite of the winds

Oh yeah, my score the other day was twice as high as yours, so I must be twice as good a golfer, right?

your "56" is the reason I don't play scrambles.

I don't believe they shot 16 under. That would mean that the 4 "weekend" golfers are way better than a pro. There is no accountability and I hear about way too many mid to low 50 rounds in scrambles.

Look, this thread is a guy giving a written rehash and replay of a golf game. While I have no doubt OP is a damn nice guy, and a good golfer, reading a recap of one's amateur golf outing, a scramble at that, is about like watching paint dry.

Don't argue with the man.

FWIW

I play in charity scrambles all the time and it's nothing for my group to shoot mid to high fifties (we aim for birdie golf every time). Of course we all have single digit handicaps, but that's really besides the point.

If people buy enough mulligans and "Tiger drives" it really isn't that difficult to do.

I have only played a handful of scrambles in my life, but it seems that they've really made them so much easier lately, with the mulligans, free drives, par is your friend, etc. I like it much better without all that stuff.

sure with a bunch of freebies like mulligans, tiger drives or whatever, but the OP didn't mention any of that.
