How long do you want to ignore this user?
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on apartments in Harker Heights? I just accepted a teaching position with Killeen ISD and will be moving down there soon. I know absolutely no one in the area, so any advice would be welcome. I'm really looking for somewhere that is safe and somewhat on the newer side. Thanks for the help.

Nothing specific comes to mind, but if you're insisting on an apartment, look around the university of Mary Hardin - Baylor in Belton. Yeah, it's students, but it ain't exactly Animal House over in Cru nation. It's only 10-20 minutes to KISD, depending on what campus you will be at...

If you can afford to rent a house, liberty valley or windmill farms should have something a teacher can afford...

Legacy Landing or turtle creek apts in Belton. Easy access to loop 121 which takes you to 190 and Harker heights.

There you have it. Couldn't remember the names of the complexes, but those should suit your needs.

Thank you for all of the advice. I will be working at a middle school on Fort Hood. I'm going down to Killeen on Thursday and will check Belton and Temple out! Thanks again.

Feel free to pm me if you need help or directions. I do not know my way around killeen/ft hood but Belton is my hometown. Steve Severn is the property supervisor of those complexes. He's an ag and my high-school class mate. Good luck. I have another friend that teaches on base so if you have questions or concerns he might could answer some them.

Didnt realize youd be working on post. Fort hood (main gate off 190 just west of Killeen)is a fairly long commute from temple - probably around 30-35 minutes each way, depending on what part of town youre driving from. Yeah, a lot of people do it, but your gasoline bill will be high, especially if the price spikes.

Belton is about as far from post as I'd go, and even then it's 22 miles from the Turtle Creek area to main gate at TJ Mills Blvd and 190.

I'd still live there over Killeen. Killeen is rough.

Heights? Decent housing subdivisions, as there are a lot of army officers in Heights. But apartment living in Heights? Just not sure about that...

Thanks for the information. I'm driving down tomorrow to sign all the paper work to get hired on, and I'll be looking around for a place.

Could anyone tell me if there is an active Aggie club in the area? Do they get together for happy hours or anything?

Yeah, there is an East bell county one and a Killeen-Fort hood one, I think. I am pretty sure the Killeen Fort hood one is fairly active - watch football games together, etc. Not sure about the east bell county one. Honestly, I've never attended an event at either one unfortunately.

I have heard the same about the killeen club. I've only been to one temple club fundraiser, and coach spinelli was the guest speaker.

Here's the Temple Club web site...

At the risk of alienating someone, might I make a suggestion to the Temple folks....

It seems like every week in he fall there was a thread on here that went along the lines of "Anybody know where to watch the game in Temple?"

Could the Temple club perhaps set up, or at least designate, game watching venues in the Temple area? Seems reasonable..

Yeah, yeah.. I know.... If you can do better....

Just a suggestion, and from reading this board, there appears to be interest...

Maybe they had watch parties, and I just didn't see it advertised. Who knows....

Living in Belton or Temple will be a long drive. There are several places in Heights and even Killeen that have decent apartments and duplex's. All of Killeen is not that "rough". You are going to be teaching soldier's kids and no reason to actually fear living around them.

New apartments on Constitution Drive in Copperas Cove. W Ft Hood is across the street from it. Short drive to main post.

Well, yeah, perhaps there are OK places to live in Killeen, but a teacher shouldn't feel obligated to live around her students regardless of where that is... What if a teacher's students live in a drug infested housing project? A teacher is wrong if she doesn't want to live in that project?

And I don't know how it works over there. Do some of those students possibly live on post? Would a non-military school teacher be permitted to live on post so as to live near her soldiers' kids?

The students at the school where I will be teaching all live on post. I am a civilian and will not be able to live on Fort Hood.

I don't fear living around them. I am a soldier's kid myself, and that is why I'm so excited for this particular teaching job. There are some rough areas in Killeen, and I just wanted some advice.

I have only ever gone down to Killeen and stayed on Fort Hood with my parents. I was just looking for some advice from people that know the area and am very grateful for this information.
