I just saw where you mentioned San Angelo would run out of water in about a year (i think you said), and you've mentioned the lack of rain here in Central Texas causing a possible similar crisis.

Is this a hobby of yours or your career field? Can you tell us about what is going on here in CenTex and our future chances for also running out of water?

Thanks in advance.

Nah. Just a dork.

Heard a lot about water resources growing up from family in agriculture, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I like weather and geography, and the recent drought has spun off an Interest in water resources, or the looming lack thereof, I guess...

That's really it...

San Angelo and much of West Texas is are in dire straights, or soon will be if the drought persists. Some San Angelo area lakes LITERALLY went dry for the first time ever recently. The Sept. storm put about 25' of water in Spence (I think it was Spence) that bought them about a year, maybe more. San Angelo's water reservoir got about 12' of water in September, but none since.

Here in Central Texas, I think we're OK for now. L Belton is back on its way down with summer looming but is still better than it was in late 2011. Another dry spell like 2011 however and it could get bad. Near term though, we're fine.

Georgetown is way down again, and Buchanan will soon be at an all time low without significant rain. Highland lakes are in terrible shape with summer coming up.

Just something to worry about, I guess

Here's a couple of articles about Lake Spence drying up, and the town of Robert Lee.

Keep in mind Spence Reservoir is a 15000 acre, 108 foot deep lake (much larger and deeper than Lake Belton) that WENT DRY

Robert Lee is a small town, but what happens if larger towns like San Angelo, Midland, or Lubbock literally run out of water, and there is no water around to "pump in"?

Really seems unthinkable.....

PS- my observations are very unscientific. I am not a scientist. Just a curious guy....

I ask because the same things fascinate me.

I love weather, but I am interested on the effects of weather, like drought.

Thanks for any info you can give us! I, for one, share your interest.

I was about to bring up Spence, but you covered it pretty well.

I have a lot of friends from Robert Lee that were freaking out about it.

I remember as a child thinking only OLD people talked about rainfall. As a teen it changed to OLD people WITH GARDENS. By the time I married and we had a garden it changed to worrying about long-term lakes and streams for my children's use.

Now, I am OLD and I realize the dire importance of rainfall in the ability to sustain life...IN HUMANS.

We cant run out of water. water is constantly replenished. It may move to another area of the planet.. we simply readjust to changing conditions.. They did build cities in a desert and certain areas cant sustain that many people.

Localities can run out of water. And have.

What's your point?

Spence has a large amount of available storage but I don't think it has ever been more than 70% full. Belton has more water now than spence has ever had.
