So I might be moving to Temple soon, not 100% sure yet. But I was wondering if any Temple residents here might be able to point me towards the good areas to live and away from the not so good areas. Looking for something that won't break the bank and that's relatively close to Scott & White. As of now it looks like I'll be living by myself or 1 roommate. I've only driven through Temple once, so I really know nothing about the place, so any info will likely be helpful.

For apartments, most medical students live in Chappell Hill (or Creek, it's the same development), Wild Flower, or Pecan Pointe. Chappell Hill is near I-35 and is probably 5 min from S&W. Not anything special, but nice enough, cheap, and plenty safe. I'd say the majority of med students live there. Wild Flower and Pecan Pointe are farther west, nicer, a little more expensive, and would be around 10ish min from S&W.

Those are the main ones. There are others, and other posters can probably tell you better, but anything that avoids the North side of town will be a good area. They also just built a new complex behind Wal-Mart that seems pretty nice, but I don't know how expensive they are. That would be about 3 min from S&W.

Haha sorry, that's just my perception. I haven't been up that way much other than to go to the post office. When we were looking at houses, we looked at one on the North side, and there were about 4 cars in front of every house. That was enough to scratch that area off our list. I'm sure there are nice places, like I said I just don't go up there that often.

i kid.

yes it's a bit rough. There are some amazing ones up there (mainly 9th, 11th, and 13th) but as a general rule you're correct. I live a block from the chinese mansion and the spanish style villas. i also live 2 blocks from people i'm fairly confident are selling drugs.

just wanted to see a little squirming.

Thanks for the feedback. Generally speaking, what's the traffic like in Temple in the mornings and randomly throughout the day? Being from Houston, one of the things I loathe the most is traffic. So if traffic is bad, I wouldn't mind spending a little more to live a little closer. But otherwise, I wouldn't mind living a little farther out.

Also, anyone know of any duplex type properties where I can avoid paying indirectly for pool maintenance and other stuff that comes with living in an apartment complex.

And which are the good gyms/fitness centers in town? I'd like to try and live close to one of those.

Again, thanks for your help.

Its not like living inside the loop in houston. You don't pay more if you live close to work. I dont know where your job is (EDIT - doh!!. S&W), but pretty much everywhere in Temple is close to work

As far as gyms, there's the usual GymX type stuff on 57th and the loop and its no more than 5 minutes from anywhere in town (about 2 minutes from S&W)

As for traffic, there is none, other than busy streets at 8 and 5. It moves and the drive is short.. There is no 2 hours on a freeway going 15 MPH on your way to work or home.

I think you're shell shocked from living in Houston..

As far as living arrangements, there are apartments all over town. You need to just hit the ground and look around to see what suits your needs. As for duplexes, don't know much about them. Just google realtors and/or rental property and see what you find. I don't know what to tell you about where to live. There are new parts and old parts of town. There is high dollar and low rent - just like anywhere else.

Everybody will have a different opinion on where is the best place to live in Temple. And then of course a couple of guys will tell you that you should live in Cameron and commute a half hour each way but its worth it because Yoe has such a badass 2A athletic program. You just gotta decide what fits your needs.

Bottom line, you'll be able to figure out old /newand rich/poor by driving around for an hour. The town is not that big.

If you are used to Houston, NO traffic in temple will be bad. I live on 2305 near two of the complexes mentioned. I am less then ten minutes from the hospital. You would have exactly ONE traffic light after you exit the loop.

Same with the places out 31st street. No real city traffic.

Sometimes the traffic on 31st is so bad that i may not make it through a light after it turns green - cars may be that stacked up. And i take 5th and add about two minutes to the commute.

Talk about a traffic jam! Scott and 31st the other day! There were 6 cars at the light! I almost went crazy waiting!

I actually avoid 31st at all costs. . Not because of traffic but the lights coming from Northside are horribly timed

Thanks for the info everyone. Like you said, I think I'll request some time off and drive up there to check out all the places. And you're right, living in Houston has left me traumatized when it comes to traffic.

If anyone has any additional info before I head up there, regarding places to live, gyms/rec centers, good areas, etc, I'd be glad to hear it.

Thanks

i really think you're going to be OK living anywhere in the greater Temple/Belton area. I don't think there's a place you can live in either city limits that you can't get to anywhere in 30 minutes. just need to know when 31st, 2305, I35, or the loop is the quickest for you.

as far as gyms we have a few 24 hour fitness scattered about. Gym X and the summit are your more full service places. We are getting a Gold's in next year as well.

Yeah forgot about Summit. That is a large, city owned fitness center. Weights, pool, cardio equipment, courts, etc. the rate is lower if you live in the city of Temple...

i was at the summit for about 2 years. loved it. nothing but old guys and me in there.

Well, I made it to Temple this past week and looked at a bunch of places. Not very many places had openings around when I need to move in. Kind of puts me

Would anyone happen to know anything about The Bridge, Marland Place, Apple Creek, Greenbrier? Those were pretty much the only places in my price range that had openings when I'll be needing it.

Also, c-jags, The Summit, is it a pretty good place for free weight lifting? The Bridge aparemtns are pretty close to it, and I didn't get a chance to check it out, but that could be a +1 for the Bridge if I end up going to the Summit.

Thanks again everyone.

both Gym X and Summit have free lifting. I wasn't a member but i would assume Gym X would have better weight stations unless you're a Lunk I think you'll be fine at the summit.

Apple Creek is across the street from The Fieldhouse. Not sure if they have free weights. Of those choices I would choose between apple Creek or the bridge. Also temple is getting a golds gym soon off of 35 between temple and Belton.
