Anyone a member or played there? Course pretty well kept? Nice folks?

Still pretty new to the area and am fairly intrigued by how low the rates are for Junior Memberships. Took an informal tour last week and may call back to see if I could get a round in sometime...

Not a member but the course is good, and well kept. At least it was when I last played there a couple of years ago...

Mill Creek is supposedly being rebuilt and upgraded so that will hopefully be a 27-hole alternative.

Not a member. played there many times, SIL worked there for several years, wife worked there a couple of summer pre-TAMU graduation.

It is the best course in Bell County.

From what I understand about Mill Creek, there is not enough leadership at the moment to keep the course up to snuff.

I have not played the new Sammon's course, but from what I have heard, it's nowhere close to what Wildflower is.

Of course Sammons isn't the same as playing Wildflower. Sammons though is a great municipal course. Mill Creek has new ownership that is pouring the money into it. In a few years Mill Creek will back to its heyday. Back in the day, I would have chosen Mill Creek over Wildflower any day.

I've been told Mill Creek will be back to 27 holes by Labor Day.

We'll see...

Thanks guys. I haven't played any of the area courses and I moved here last summer. Plan on playing each at least once.

Been playing phone tag with the membership coordinator for a few days now but want to take the wife out for a more formal tour. Decision will prob turn on pool, gym, and the other amenities along with the course and how often we really think we'd use it all.

I've been a member for several years, grew up playing golf competitively (hence the grinder), and was a member of a moderately nice country (in the conroe/woodlands area) club my entire youth.

I don't know how much you play or what you are used to out of a country club. Where I grew up golf was huge and on an entirely different level than around here.

The course is pretty good. It is very fair and moderately challenging. I think rating is over par, gold tees have it at 74 i think.

it is kept up reasonably well. Not great, but pretty good.

Bill the head pro is really nice and will make a point to get to know you. He is a very nice pro A+

if you need lessons, Greg Antunes very good and will meet the needs of most any golfer I would think.

Pool is ok. If you don't have a pool or neighborhood pool, you will probably use it. I think it is a little small for the number of people that try to use it. Our neighborhood pool is smaller and less crowded usually.

Dining is pretty nice. They just completed a major renovation of the grill and club room. Nice quite place to go in the evenings if you want to get out and not have to deal with crowds. We go sometimes and are the only people there. Haven't been back for dinner since the new menu. Food was fine before. probably as good or better (considering the money they put into it I would assume it is an upgrade).

For like $50 extra a month you can be a member of the "one" club and have half off all food and non alcoholic beverages. This does not include special celebrations

they have nice events on holidays. their 4th of july get together is a really nice get together. Big BBQ, bounce houses, etc... for kids. games and band then a nice firework show after dusk

The Gym is pretty good. I quit my other membership. That is a little misleading as i had gotten pretty good about doing insanity/p90x. However, for when I do want weights, it is fine for me. They have a fair amount of aerobic machines, they have weight machines and free weights. It is not huge (about half the size of your typical strip mall gym) but you may be the only one in there. I've never seen more than 4 other people in there. I usually would see one or no one in there.

I hear they have an active tennis program, and it sure looks that way. I don't play. I know they have some sort of league.

The locker room is nice. what else can I say. It is clean, well stocked with soaps and the like. Towels and a couple of showers.

There are a lot of members. but not too many. You see this at the parties, such as july 4th. I think it really draws a lot of social members.

as far as the people I'd say it is fine. Like I said, I see a lot of people only at the parties or occasionally for after church brunch, mother's day, stuff like that. For that it is nice. When I bump into people at the gym, they are friendly, but I like most are there at 530 am to strike up conversations.

all that being said I do have one complaint. The etiquette on the golf course is not good. Like I said, i grew up playing and I played competitively most of my life. You can really see the lack of knowledge in your fellow golfers from time to time. when the course is crowded i've been hit into twice. And I'm not saying someone really got ahold of a drive and hit it farther than expected, I'm talking about some jacka$$ hit into me once on a green when I was putting. I was livid. That was the most egregious but i think it is representative, as i've witnessed several rude events. I think it comes down to golf simply not being a big sport around here (hence lack of many golf courses) and most these people not growing up understanding that sort of stuff would get you thrown off of many decent courses.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Growing up playing somewhere in The Woodlands is not comparable to growing up playing at Leon Valley (R.I.P.)

I learned how to play golf at Leon Valley. Man, I actually miss that cow pasture.

What hole was that? -----

- front nine
- perpendicular to the leon
- south side of the course
- "par 4"
- about 280
- sand trap overgrown by weeds and bermuda

Anyway, my first birdie was on that hole. Was an eagle hole, green was drivable

Haven't played there since late 80's so memory has faded

Leon Valley was the only course in the area that would allow you to bring your own cooler onto the course and would even actually allow you to use their ice machine to full it.

Of course a buddy of mine once tee'd off and hit a Jack ass that was grazing in the middle of the course.

Loved the little par three that was along the river. Except for the fact that it had carpet grass growing on the tee box.

Another good memory is a co worker and I once drank an 18 pack EACH during a round. Drunk as Cooter Brown!

Can't believe both Leon Valley and The Old Nine at Temple College are both gone. Makes me sad and its a big part of the reason I hardly ever play anymore. I totally understand the sentiment of the OP, but as a hack who wasn't ever very good who also needed a cheaper option those courses were perfect.

CaptainPablo......the hole you are talking about was hole #7. I loved that hole. Unless you hooked out of bounds, it was hard to get anything above a bogey.

Yes, I thought it was 7 but wasn't sure. It's been a long time.

Pablo, if you ever played after they rearranged the holes, if you couldn't birdie #1 you had serious problems. It was like 285yds from the blues with an ever-so-slight dog leg to the left.

Basically hit a drive moderately straight and if you aren't chipping towards the pin from about 30 yds, you're terrrible.
