Probably should have asked this before planting some stuff at the new house, but does anyone in the Temple area dabble in fruit gardening? I've got a toddler who goes through a pint of blackberries every other day so I planted four Apache blackberry bushes a few weeks ago. Thought about planting some Kiowa blackberries on the other side of the house.

Any experience with those or other kinds of berry bushes? What about methley plums? Any other easy to grow options? I thought about grapes but i didnt know which, if any, would grow here. I did a soil test and it's fairly alkaline...7.5 or so. Thick black clay dirt.

Contact the county agent's office in Belton. They have a complete list of recommended fruit & vegetable varieties that do well in Bell county as well as growing tips.

Alkaline soil isn't really good for berries. I think they like acidic soils better. We planted berries when we first got to McClennan county and we couldnt keep them alive. Didnt treat the soil and the ph here is higher than 8.
