There was a really bad wreck on 485 on Saturday around 3. The road was completely shut down in both directions (west of the 77 intersection).

I have seen my life flash before my eyes too many times on this road. The wildlife is enough of a problem we shouldn't have to worry about idiots passing up hills, and driving 90+mph.

Suggested prayers before getting off 53 or 6. 2 Our Fathers, 3 hail mary's, and approx 3.5 roserys while on 485.

Be safe. life is fragile. Somebody loves you.

Good grief, people. It's not THAT bad.

I've travelled that road for decades

Just watch what you're doing

It's no worse than any other FM Road

I've never seen wildlife or dps on that road.

I travel that road every weekend.

Lots of wildlife, but DPS is rare.

people are stupid driving on that road. It has way too much traffic, too many 18 wheelers for a small road. You definitely have to watch for deer, though, and pass smart.

"Wildlife" could mean the occasional raccoon, possum, or buzzard

Deer are somewhat rare, but their population in east bell county has increased dramatically since 20 years ago, when deer were virtually non-existent out there

You do see deer around the Milam County portion of 485 sometimes

As for cops, when I posted the OP, I had just seen one county and one state with people pulled over

It's rare to see LE out there, but every once in awhile you do

Yeah, it's mostly in Milam County where the deer appear.

they also made the intersection at 485 and Hwy 77 a four way stop, which has helped.

Well I did pass wild hog trappers one time last year. They were riding 4 wheelers, pulling traps with wild hogs in them. It was definitely in milam county. I almost wrecked. Don't see that often.

On that stretch, that now means hogs. And they are like hitting a brick wall.

The closest I ever came to having a catastrophic wreck was on that road headed back from A&M one night. A draw had backed up and flooded the west bound lane and I didn't see it until it was too late. I was lucky that my truck stayed on the road, but it's a very dangerous road under certain circumstances.

Yeah, there's lots of hogs out there.

Heck there's lots of hogs everywhere now

I just haven't seen that many along the road or as road kill along 485

I did see a dead horse though recently. But it was not by the road... It was in a pasture

Yeah, so have I. I never have gotten why the 485-77 intersection is so dangerous. I have traveled that road dozens of times every year for decades and never had a close call at all.

The road itself is pretty hilly and windy though and people drive way too fast. I can see how some head on collisions might occur. But I agree that many FM roads are just as bad or worse.

I don't know how old you are, but the intersection of 485 and 53 used to be called "dead man's curve" because of all the fatal accidents there

We still call it that just because we always have

They have of course widened it, made a better embankment, and installed signs and flashing lights over the years so it's not nearly as bad as as it once was

At least they have stop signs now at the intersection of 485 and 77. Might have even been a full stoplight. When I drove through there in November I was like wow, this is long overdue.

I really wish they would but at least for now with the 4 Way stop no one has died.....I think it was put in some time late last summer.

"Deadman's Curve" - I don't remember it ever looking any different than it does now but that's what I have always heard it called and thus have always called it the same.

I remember when it was unbanked, and there was limited ability to really see, the farm road came into it as the temple end of the curve and people did not look behind to see what was coming from the lott direction.

My dad worked for Bell Co. Sheriff's Dept. for 27 years and that was one of the main things I remember him talking into me about driving between Belton and CS. It's not a great intersection.

Yeah, that "s" curve under the railroad tracks

"S" curve under the train overpass at the county line on 36 between Rogers and Buckolts. Seen some bad kimshee there.

Ya'll need to start taking FM 2095 to Gause.

Why would you take 53 / 485 from Belton to CS??
Captain Pablo
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I've taken both routes many times and from Temple, 485 is faster than 36/gause

36/gause is a little longer and there are speed traps, reduced speed zones and/or traffic lights in rogers, bucholtz, cameron, and Hearne (unless you go through Mumford which is even longer)

And other than brief stops at stop signs, 485 is free and clear of red lights all the way to hearne, and even then you can avoid downtown Hearne by cutting over to 79 by taking that 1st right after the Brazos

And there's far fewer cops on 485 than 36 and 79

From belton, it's probably a little shorter to take 36, but I still can make it faster by taking loop 363 to 53 simply because there are fewer slowdowns and radars along the way

What Pablo said.

Less police, less traffic, fewer slow downs.

Yes, but instead of fixing the situation the just rebuilt it as it was.

I have always gone Belton to 485. I used to go east Adams but now I take the loop to 53. A couple of years ago my son and I were driving home from a bb game so it was late on a week night and TPD pulled me over for speeding on east Adams. You know, where it goes 45 to 40 to 35 to 30 and back to 35mph thru downtown? I was going 35 in the 30 and I really didn't appreciate being pulled over that late at night in a vacant lot without any street lights around. My Ford Flex must have been ominous. So they let me go with a verbal warning because another call came in. The loop is so much less stressful.
