My wife and I will be looking to relocate to Central Texas (near Waco/Robinson) in the next year or two to be closer to family. I'm not very familiar with this area because I grew up around Houston. I'm not very familiar with the jobs and the industry there either. Currently I'm working in Supply Chain for a Fortune 500 oil and gas transmission company, located in Houston. I'm sure I will take a hit on salary, but there are more important things for us. To my knowledge there isn't much oil and gas opportunity to speak of. My ultimate goal would be to open a small business but that would be much later down the road.

I'm curious if there are any other Ags that have made this move or that have always lived in the area and could provide some pointers on companies to look at. I majored in Industrial Distribution and have 5 years experience as a Project Coordinator in the switchgear manufacturing industry and 4 years as a Supply Chain Specialist for oil and gas - mostly with line pipe experience.

Any suggestions on where to live or any pointers at all would be very much appreciated! Doesn't have to be precisely in Waco or Robinson - anything in a 30 mile radius could work.

Or - am I totally screwed??? haha

A lot of nice places to live in and around.

Robinson is nice. China spring area is nice but growing fast. Woodway is old school and established. Stay away from east waco, bellmead area.

A lot of employment in the area. Not sure how your experience transfers but there are a couple of industrial parks, and a lot of sales positions.
Waco has it's downfalls, but it also has a lot for a family with the museum, zoo, library system, and great churches.

downtown Waco is improving drastically. That would be my choice for living, particularly along Austin Avenue. Was there over the weekend. has improved by yards. As for jobs, You can't go wrong with Mars, SpaceX or Time Mfg.

Does your wife intend to work?

We moved from Houston to Waco in 1978. Husband's job downtown Houston required an hour bus ride on an express bus and we haven't looked back!

Waco is a fabulous place to rear a family but if you are young and want night life...

We chose Hewitt. Our kids were all involved in Midway Little League. The schools prepared them well for college............if we had to do it over again we would do the same exact thing!

I'll spare you my classic anti-Waco rant because it's early and I just don't feel up to it.

To find gainful employment in Waco, you'll need to network like crazy. I'd start at church and go from there. If you're unchurched, you won't even need to speak up, somebody will be there to help you find a new church home as soon as you hit the ground in Waco.

Also, give the local A&M Club a try. You might be able to get some leads there. Be persistent and good luck.
