Good man. My brothers and I feel fortunate to have been coached by him. Thoughts and prayers for his family at this difficult time.

Never met him but being in the business at one time I also never heard a bad word about him. Built the Midway program from what I understand. RIP

Was coach at Rosebud-Lott in '81.

Great man, MISD has lost a true legend.

Back in the era of MISD open campus for lunch, if you didn't have a friend with a car, you were stuck in the cafeteria "commons". In 10th Grade, me and some of my band geek friends started playing Chess during lunch to pass the time. 55 minutes is a long time to eat a sandwich. We had some good games until "Coach" Bachtel banned us from playing Chess in the cafeteria at lunch because the school didn't allow "games of chance" to be played on school property.

My son was either 9th or 10th grade and needed to shave so someone sent him to the locker room. Coach Bachtel saw him and called the other coaches...Come in here boys, Santy Claus has showed up early! Coach B, Coach Hill and Coach Weithorn all got a good laugh at the excessive foam on my son's face.

Coach Bachtel also ran the track most mornings. I would bet his weight didn't fluctuate 10 pounds in his entire tenure at Midway. When my son went out for freshman baseball, Coach Bachtel came out and ran with them one afternoon...talked to the parents about keeping his girlish figure and how he didn't ever want to ask Jamie if his shorts made his hips look big. He was just a nice guy.

Coach Bachtel's brother suffered a serious injury after hitting his head on the bench in a game Friday night against Malakoff. Sad.

Wow. That's terrible. I hope he recovers.

I've never heard of Scurry-Rosser but this is the first time I've ever heard about Malakoff other than from a guy that was in the FTAB with me who was from Malakoff.
