It's possible they were in REALLY REALLY crappy shape, but more likely some lazy weathly moron just decided "what the hell, I'll get a new ride", and never checked the numbers. The entire program was a terrible waste of resources.

Did dealers have to crush the cars? Or could they have just eaten the $4500 and resold the car?

No, to get the money from uncle sam, the dealer had to destroy the engine in the car. It is possible that some of the dealers just gave the customer the cash out of pocket and put the used car on their used car lot, outside of the program, but these vehicles were listed as officially participating in the program, so their engines were all destroyed.
This has got to be fake.
The list also says a boatload of Grand Wagoneers. Thats sad....you used to see those everywhere.
The dealers have got to be crazy to have destroyed all those cars. In fact, if the trade in value is above $4500... just give it to them out of pocket under the guise of cash for clunkers. Nothing illegal about that.

to be fair, there was an article a while back about the guy that clunkerd the quatrasport, and it barely ran and he tried to sell it for 4500 and nobody would buy it, so he clunkered it. I can't really say I blame him. still kinds sad since the GNX and old BMW 8 series hold a special place in my car heart (does that sound gay?)
There is no telling what the actual condition of those cars were.

Negative...my '05 CTS-V even qualified because the combined mpg is less than 19mpg.
Thats messed up because no 2008 ALtima qualifies.

Seeing the 850, E34 M5 and E30 M3 go down like that makes me want to burn something to the ground.
