Ashamed to say this happened "in my back yard". Was parked by I-40 so no telling where it is now.

Amarillo newspaper
quote:
When James Shapiro drove into Amarillo Friday evening, he was disappointed to find the car show he had heard about was not in town.

When he checked out of his hotel Sunday, he was more disappointed to find his prized, ultra-rare classic convertible gone without a trace.

The 74-year-old retired federal police officer and body shop owner from Springfield, Mo., called hotel staff and then police to help him locate the 1969 white and gold Hurst/Olds convertible, which should be pretty hard to miss on the open road.

“It’s only one of 25 ever built,” Shapiro said. He said his is one of a few “clones” of the two convertible models Hurst/Olds manufacturers produced in 1969.....

that is tragically sad.
Classic car theft in Hotel parking lots is very common.

I'm putting it up here and on the H.A.M.B. If anyone else has car-related message boards they frequent, please post on your board as well.

My wife's 4runner was stolen last week just south of I40 here in the 'rilla, hence the Lexus thread...

Man this makes me sick...I had my cutlass stolen a few years ago from my parents back yard. I felt sick to my stomach seeing it gone.

Hopefully they can find it before it gets stripped and parted out.

Oh man T&P on getting it back.

I had a Hurst/Olds back in HS. I really miss that car. My parents donated it to charity for a write off when I came up to A&M.

This sucks...but....uhm...its a clone. It might just be time to start a new project because Im betting that one is long gone. Id be pissed if my '70 442 disappeared, but they aren't terribly rare...even less so if you get a cutlass and build a clone.

Maybe I missed something but my alarm was much less when I read it was a clone. Its no less tragic really, but I would be much happier if my 442 clone was stolen over my numbers matching one....

Unconfirmed reports that it has been located in a parking garage in Amarillo. If I hear official word, I will post again.

There were quite a few more than 25 Hurst Olds in 1969. Infact there were 914 (2 of those being convertibles) produced. If his is simply a 'clone' of the original it is still valuable but no where near the $75,000 the article claims. I have a hard time believing that a real H/O convertible wouldnt be stashed away in a museum.

I believe it says 25 were made that were painted white and gold.

ALL 69 H/O's were white with the gold stripes.

By now, it is lowered to the ground by 3 inches, has a "boom boom" system in it and is painted an irredecent purple with extended spike hub caps.

If only "they" knew...

Someone should keep watch on classic autotrader.com to see if someone tries to sell it.
