I am looking at the '15 F150's and wanted to get the opinion of the board in the difference between the two. I do not do any towing and probably will not any time soon.

I've had my 2.7 BOOOOOOOOST Sport for about a month now and this thing is a blast to drive. She'll sip gas when you want her to, but she's also racetruck when I mash it.

Also recently learned about "Sport" mode...holy crap it's awesome.

The only thing that's annoying to me about the 2.7 is there is currently no way to permanently disable the Auto Stop / Start, have to turn it off every time you turn on the engine. I got over it quickly, bugs my wife more than me.

In short, 2.7 has been awesome so far.

How long are you going to keep it?
3.5 for longevity
2.7 for fun

Hope is to keep for 8-10 years. Test drove a supercrew sport tonight and had fun.

From what I've heard the gas mileage difference is pretty minimal, so why wouldn't you get the 3.5L?

Where do you live? I was in the same boat two weeks ago. Was going to go with the 2.7 but my neighbor used to sell fords a couple years ago. Works for Toyota but just got a ford about 8 months ago.

I am in Houston and he said get the 5.0 over any Ecoboost as they don't seem to last as long in areas with high humidity and a lot of rain. Moisture gets in the turbos and causes issues. Who knows if it is any true or not. I did find a 5.0 for actually less and went with that.

Plus the 2.7 is still new. I have heard good things about it though.

Drive all 3 engines. Buy what you like.

You're paying for it, not us.

Live in Houston. Had a 06 4.6 for the last 9 years and it did the job. I dont tow or have plans to. I put 500lbs or so in the bed when getting coffee beans every month or so but nothing usually heavier than that. I drove one last night and it had plenty of get ip and go to it. Going test drive another one in about an hour.

On a side note I do want to put a different exhaust on it. Just a preference and am a little curious as to how it will sound with the turbos.

I've only heard one ecoboost with an exhaust system. It was done by All Out Off-road in Richmond and it sounded very weird. Plus why cover up the turbo whistle ???

I'd go with the 5.0 and 3.31 axle if I were in your position.

How is the 2.7 not a frigging PIG in an f150? I'd go 3.5 minimum. When I get ready to buy I'll probably go V8...f--- all that v6 noise. I'm actually more worried about the v6 and turbo from a longevity standpoint....I like to keep vehicles into the 250k mile range. I am pretty sure at 14 years and 270k the V8 will be good to go...not sure about the ecoboost. Anyone know?

Considering the debuted in 2011? Watch list this thread and check it in 9-10 years.

Turbos generally have a 150k design life. I can't imagine the 2.7 turbos lasting longer than that since they're probably always making boost.

5.0 would be best but I think the 3.5 is a good compromise.

Do most turbo engines need them replaced at 150k? I'm genuinely intrigued. I know the oil seals can fail and will lead to a smokey exhaust, but there should be plenty of cars as examples. Vw/audi 1.8-2.0T have been around for a while in the usa.

I'd go 5.0 - this coming from a 3.5 boost owner

5.0 all the way. My cousin just bought a new f150 and the guy told him the same thing about humid climates. He lives in Texarkana FWIW. He went 5.0 and hasn't looked back. Hauls a small tractor, 4-wheelers and other stuff quite a bit and hasn't had one complaint. Not sold on the boost yet.

Definitely true of performance turbos (Subarus last around 150k) but we'll see how the ecoboost "economy" turbos last.

I went with the 5.0 for similar reasons (potential longevity). No real data to support it but I liked my chances better for long term ownership with the 5.0 v. the boost.

I also think turbos have come a long way in the past 10-20 yrs. Metal quality, ball bearing vs journal, billet wheels, aux oil/coolant pumps, etc.

I think longevity is definitely achievable in turbocharged engines, just look at turbodiesels. Some of the longest running engines in existence are turbodiesels. It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison but a turbo doesn't have to be a weak link necessarily.

Thanks for all of the feedback. One of the biggest concerns that I had was reliability down the road with the turbos and everything, especially on a new engine. I consider myself pretty handy when working on a car and looking under the hood, I question if I could do much past oil changes on the new engine.

I test drove each. You can tell the difference between the two so if I do decide to go that route it will be the 3.5. No a big fan of the new auto off feature that they have, even though it can be turned off. I see that causing issues. I know they test all of this, but testing does not equate to 8 years of use and the issues that you may have at that time.

After the engine, I was not real impressed with the interior. I wanted to avoid leather, just seen leather turn out crappy to many times after 5-6 years and really like how the cloth held up over 10 years in my last one. The new cloth in the trucks seemed cheap, and not much better than you would expect from an office chair from WalMart. I did like how large the cab has gotten. I sat in the back with the seats pushed all the way back and there was still a lot of room back there, but at the same time it could be problematic with kids and not being able to reach into the back seat easily if need be.

I am going to look again this week, but I am starting to lean back towards the Explorer. Just seems like you can get more bang for your buck and it will still handle 90% of what I need it for.

Luckily yes, and hope to go through more coming up. We roast commercially.

I've had their "new" cloth interior for 5 years and it has held up well. My 2002 F150's cloth interior showed signs of wear later in life, but this interior has not and is easy to steam clean when you spill something. I also find it more supportive for my lower back, but that could also be attributed to the new seat design.

I didn't watchlist but I am checking on this after 10 years.

In the process of buying a new f150 and thinking about the 2.7. I test drove it and it was pretty nice. I tow a camper very seldomly, but it's only 5000 pounds so I think this would be the perfect engine for me? Reviews online say it may be more reliable than the 3.5.

Holy thread bump!!!!

I'm not the board expert but most here seem to think the 2.7 is a great engine, if not one of fords best engines.

You have my permission to buy

Both are solid nowadays.

The 5.0 has been having some issues lately. Drinking oil like a sieve.

Just know turbos eventually have to be replaced. It's a part of auto life. But after replaced the 3.5 and 2.7 keep chugging along. We're at 165K miles on ours. Changed the turbos at 130K.

Had a 5.0 in my '13 F150. The transmission eventually went out 2 years ago (had it for 9 years and 200,000 miles with no issues except the water pump). It was solid.

Edit: Actually, it had a blown rear main seal causing it to leak about 0.5 quart every 7000 miles. Not a huge issue since it didn't start doing it until about 150k.

Agree on seeing more and more about the 5.0 issues.

Any thoughts on the Powerboosts? Seems more complicated to me which means more things to go wrong, but found a good lead on a 2024 with some good rebates.

I think the consensus is that the 2.7 is actually the best motor if you're not planning to tow frequently. I'm on my second 3.5 boost and went almost 200k on previous one with just replacing throttle body and spark plugs. New one had a sensor for wastegate go bad but it was covered in warranty and no other problems.

I'm sure the 2.7 would tow a 5,000lb trailer just fine. The 3.5 holds 75-80 pulling a trailer much better though

I almost went with powerboost but was hesitant with how new it was. I think they're good but didn't want to trade the larger fuel tank 36 v 30 gallons and the decreased payload for the battery pack. They do have better city driving mileage from what I have heard though.
