Our 2011 Accord is experiencing a delayed start. It's got a new battery so it's not that. And it doesn't turnover slow when it does decide to start.

You turn the key and it might be 7-10 seconds before anything happens and the vehicle vehicle goes thru the start process.

Ignition relay maybe??

How big is your keychain?

If your contacts aren't worn, the starter is the next suspicion

We don't keep many keys on a key ring for this reason.

You think starter? Just the solenoid? It starts fine once it decides to do something, but there is a delay in anything happening between when the key is turned and when the engine turns over.

You sure the crank amps on that new battery are correct?

Usually on Hondas when it does this, I see the starter failing in the next few months.

Thanks. I've been watching some videos and reading some things. This car is at 160k miles so it seems it's lasted longer than most.

It is odd that once you drive it for a bit, it starts pretty easily with only slight hesitation when you turn the key.

Let it sit overnight or 6 hours plus, you are looking at a long delay between turning the key and anything happening.

Maybe it's one of the rare diesel Accords. You have to wait for the glow plugs to be ready.

Kidding……

I would love a diesel Accord with a glow plug.

Last diesel I had was a '76 Mercedes that belonged to my dad. It was a big heavy beast but man it got great mileage.

Expensive as crud to get it fixed though.

This. Happened to my son's accord. First we got an error code on the crank sensor, replaced then and the code came back.

Then after some research figured out it was the the starter and replaced it. Then we had all kinds of error codes, start problems, and won't go over 30mph problems.

Turns out some aftermarket starters will pull to many amps on the system and cause some electrical fault. If you replace the starter, go with OEM or, IIRC Denso is also recommended to work OK.

BTW, they replaced a relay for now to see how it goes. The shop hasn't been able to reproduce the problem.

It's still got a delay but it's been 3-5 seconds, not 10-12.

We are taking it back this week to stay overnight so they can park it in the bay this time and hook it to their computer first thing in the morning when starting it.

Starter change out ain't cheap on this car.
