If you were looking to spend $60-70k with the top priorities being safety, luxury, and dependability (not wanting to be in the shop all the time), what would you buy and why? Prefer an SUV because generally I feel safer in those being higher off the ground, but not opposed to sedan and have driven one recently.

Lexus SUV was on my very short list (along with a defender). You would choose an older LX vs. a newer GX?

I'd maybe choose a GX if I were a woman, but they're too small for me.

Volvo XC90 is what you are looking for.

What do you mean by newer GX? The outgoing 460 or the new 550?

A lightly used LX570 is a beast.

Sorry. I meant that all the LX's I've looked at are very expensive. To stay in the price range quoted I would have to get one that is at least 4-5 years old vs. basically a brand new GX 550 or for sure a 460.

Another +1 for LX. Keep trying to get mine back from my wife.

I've been looking at Rivians tonight. They seem to check most of my boxes.

In my opinion, the top of the line Mazda CX-90 is the most bang for your buck.

Check resale value, a lot of electric vehicles plummet in value. Also, Rivian isn't doing so great with the sales being down. Do your research so you don't end up in a Fisker situation.

Until it comes to any maintenance whatsoever. The inline 6 is unproven and absolutely crammed into the engine bay

Inline 6 engines with proper maintenance will run a long time. An 86 E30 I owned, when I sold it this year, had 290K. Maybe crammed... but unproven? lol

My current Flat 6 I'll run forever.

4 bangers, inline or otherwise... not interested.

There are probably lots of 2021s in your price range. That's the last year of the LX570. 4-5 years old wouldn't bother me at all, in fact that's the sweet spot IMO. All depends on how you like to buy cars and how long you keep them.

Biggest problem with the LX570 is lack of touch screen.

In addition to the above I've been very happy with my '21 X5 (bought used certified a year+ ago). Maybe look at an X7 pending the size you need?

Agree in that I'm not sure I'd be looking at Defender for reliability (and I like them)

Have you looked at the Genesis SUV models or less lux brand name the Telluride / Palisade top models?

an LX (or GX) is barely even broken in at 4-5 years old. would not worry about that at all.

And a 2021 LX (LC) should be right in your budget with under 40k miles. You could probably keep the mileage under 40 and move a few years older to get under your budget.

My 2011 LX570 has a touch screen, though it's pretty dated.

How does the luxury aspect of a King ranch F350 compare to your Land cruisers? It would be significantly safer.

I recently saw Rivian ranked almost dead last for reliability of all major brands. Pretty surprised that any electric vehicle could be ranked that low.
