I have been looking for a new Ford Explorer for my wife. In the last few months I have seen them go from playing hardball to now offering $5000 off a 46K sticker (for a 2025). My friends at work think the car market will further deteriorate into next year. If I did go in now, offer 20% off sticker plus TTL and stick to that? Thanks in advance!

What's the worst they will tell you? No.
Walk out and see if car is still available next week and offer the same. I bet they'd take the offer if it's there after Christmas.

Your other option is talk to a good dealer about building the exact same car and what the price would be.

How will you pay for the car? We just bought a new Tesla, right after they started offering 0% for five years. They don't play really any of the games dealerships play with "guess the price" so not an apples to apples but if you're financing know that answer and plan accordingly. At current rates interest could easily be $5k on a five year loan.

That rarely works on a dealership.

Just sayin'
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

That usually doesn't have the desired effect. They make more money selling loans and extended warranties than they do selling cars. If you're paying cash save that til the very end.

Thanks for the info. So, what do you do if they ask you if you are financing or paying cash? Just tell them that you are not sure yet?

Yes. You're talking to a salesperson so negotiate price with them and tell them you'll worry about payment terms in financing. Those are separate transactions.

Finance it with them. Pay it off the first month. I've done this on my last 3 purchases (2 new, 1 used) and it definitely got me the best price on all 3 vehicles. I literally had them quantify how much lower they were willing to go on price if I financed with them.

Thanks for the info. Can you do that without a financial impact besides maybe having to pay the first month's interest? Do they not have pre payment penalties on car loans?

Prepayment penalties supposedly exist with some loans, but in owning cars for 30 years, I've never come across one. It is something I do ask to confirm.

Technically interest starts day 1. But I've also found they don't seem to care how much you put down as long as you are financing part of it. So I heavy up on the down payment (say 75%) then pay the loan off within a few weeks. Makes the actual interest incurred miniscule

To the bigger question. Is now before the new year the right time to buy? I see a lot of f-150 2024 inventory around Houston.

For that vehicle I'd low ball them and/or wait

Is anybody really seeing good deals on F150s yet? Seems like they're not really serious on moving trucks at Ford right now.

Yeah, I am wondering the same. I would think they have some sales targets and some incentive funny money they have to spend by 12/31.

Tell them you are financing and actually do it. Then pay it off the instant you get the details.

I paid off Mr Dubi's new vehicle 10 days after purchase, but the rate was way to high too keep the loan.

This. Cash gets you nowhere, these days. They want you to finance through them.
