Long story short, my wife and I will taking ownership of a 2009 Chevy Duramax. I am a Ford guy thru and thru. Drove a 6.0 power stroke thru high school and college. I know the sentiment around that engine, but I guess nostalgia is powerful and it is my favorite diesel engine. Helps that I know more than most about it. With that said, I know nothing about older Duramax's. Anything I need to know, look out for, or do to prevent common failures on this truck. Only has about 150k miles. Thanks in advance!

I have an '06 with 292k miles and love it. I've done the water pump, a couple of glow plugs, and the starter. All fairly straight forward repairs. Other than that, just routine maintenance.

Assuming 2009 has EGR and DPF? Any issues there? Did an EGR delete on my old powerstokes.

Mine is stock with an EGR, but no DPF. I haven't had any issues with the EGR. I may consider deleting it though if something in it breaks.

Your '06 is the venerable LBZ and a different engine than the LMM in the '09. The LMM had a small increase in HP and torque, but also added the DPF.

The LMM in your truck is a solid engine. The main issues are due to the emissions equipment (EGR and DPF) and the pistons were prone to cracking under heavy load. However, this is usually due to engines that have been tuned and are pushing more HP than stock, causing more stress on the system. If you take care of it and don't push it to the extreme, yours should be fine.

Would love to, but those shops are few and far between, and I don't have the time or patience to do it like I did when I was 18. You know anywhere near burnet that does them?

I did mine on my 2016 Ford F-250 Powerstroke. Ordered the delete kit which included a tuner from Ez Link. Took me about 2 hours to install it.

Are these guys actually still doing deletes? I assumed most shops stopped as the EPA increased their enforcement.

I'd love to delete my 2018 Duramax (L5P), but don't have the wrenching ability to do it myself (I don't think) and didn't think any shops would still do it.

Cody McBride works out of his house on weekends. A Mopar/Cummins fanatic. He's done all the delete on my SuperDuty but does mostly Dodge. In Marble Falls. If you need a number PM me.

You probably do have the ability to do it yourself. There are plenty of YouTube videos. Usually it's just a handful of bolts on a flange then a couple of hangars. Then disconnect a couple sensors on the exhaust. The egr is harder but still easy.
