Help me process the logic behind a 2WD TRD Off-Road trim?

Is there any use case for this trim at all other than looks?

I think you get a bigger tires and a little more lift than you would on other 2wd models. For most people, that will handle most of what they need. If anything, sometimes 4wd gives some folks a little more bravado than they need.

Had one as a rental. Didn't realize there was TRD without 4wd. Was shocked when I needed to run 4wd (loose sand) that there was no controller. Looked under and no cv's. Pretty useless.

Do they still come with the rear locker? Coworker has an old 1rst gen 2wd TRD with a rear locker and that rig won't die. Scampers around our jobsites like it's nothing.

These days, it's probably just an appearance package, but if it gets you a rear locker, then that would be useful for plenty of scenarios.

6-lug Tacoma come with the same size tires. The 5-lug base version is visibly smaller and also produced in fewer numbers.

TRD: Off-road trim comes with the rear e-locker.
Is it as good as 4wd? No, but it's not as expensive, either.

I had a rental truck a few years ago with open diffs and 2wd, got stuck for a minute on wet grass. Locker or 4wd would have saved a few minutes of frustration.

The current TRD Sport 2wd has a LSD since a locker isn't needed for 99% of the conditions it will be driving in
