What's the general consensus on what affects if any they will have on domestic and imported vehicles? New vs used?

All will increase.

More people will look at used cars limiting supply = higher prices

new cars, even ones built in the US, use components from Mexico, China, etc that will be higher due to tariffs = higher prices

so what's the recommendation, if you feel you'll need a new car in the next year or so, rush out and get it today?

Anyone hit the car lots this past weekend? How was it? We have seen a recent increase in Rule 1 posts

Wife is pushing hard for a new car and this tariff talk isn't helping me slow her down

I feel like it's already affecting supply. GM lots are looking a little slimmer for trucks and have fewer mid to high in trims back filling sales.

This is what anti-free market people - left and right - always seem to miss. The unintended yet obvious consequences. Tariffs to favor domestic car manufacturers/unions? Higher prices across the entire primary and secondary car market, less innovation and quality in domestic vehicles, higher inflation and lower overall standard of living for US consumers.

Escalating CAFE standards to save the environment? Higher prices across the entire primary and secondary car market, a shift from higher efficiency sedans/coupes to less efficient SUVs/light trucks/heavy duty trucks, negative environmental impact from battery mining, higher inflation and lower overall standard of living for US consumers.

Not to mention car parts will increase in price thus increasing cost to repair vehicles thus increasing auto insurance rates.

You know... the shock of high prices could be mitigated if people held onto their vehicles for more than two years.

Those Jones aren't going anywhere.

I believe I read this morning that Bessent said parts coming from Canada and Mexico (USMCA) are exempt from the tariffs.
This, to me, looks like it won't affect prices on cars manufactured in the US even if they bring in parts from Mexico and Canada.

Maybe it'll stop the flood of cheap parts that don't work. I'd pay a little more to make sure the "new" part I buy actually works the first time. You can't even be assured that buying OE parts.

Then don't buy no name parts from RockAuto or Amazon if you don't want to. Nothing is stopping you from buying Motocraft or ACDelco. Protectionist tariffs don't ensure domestic quality anyway, they do the opposite by eliminating competition.

Did you read my last sentence? I don't buy no name parts. OE or OEM only for most things. That doesn't guarantee quality.

Can we keep the political discussion on F16 and leave F46 to discussion of cars?

Interesting move. I think I read somewhere Ford has more domestic production than most others. Will be interesting to if or how GM responds. Their current incentives are pretty weak given the massive cost increases.

It used to be easy to get huge discounts and now prices are higher while discounts are lower.

What about the people like me who have held onto a vehicle for 9 years and am only looking because we need something bigger for my wife since we will soon have more butts to put in seats? I will try to keep my shock to a minimum.

According to the guy that owns givemethevin.com, used prices are up some, but they won't go crazy like they did during Covid because stimulus checks aren't flying into everyone's bank accounts and covering the down payments.

Autos and auto parts were largely specifically exempted from these tariffs. Any price increases are sales people trying to exploit ignorance.

That being said, there will be some increases I imagine, because of the uncertainty. Also, Chinese parts may not be exempted so that may will go up.

I think they are affected once the tariffs go into place.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced sweeping 25% tariffs on cars "not made in the U.S.," sending shockwaves through global automakers.
