Silverado Brake Pads and Rotors

So, I helped my son replace pads and rotors on his 2016 Silverado. The brakes have a persistent squeal when backing up after doing this. We pulled the pads back off and put a light coat of brake grease on the back of them where they contact metal. Did not fix the problem. I have been doing brake jobs since I was a kid and have never run into this problem if using new rotors or properly turned rotors. I bought these "AC Delco Gold" parts off Amazon. I am thinking now these were some sort of knockoffs (same part numbers I found on RockAuto).

I am considering getting a set of "Duralast" rotors and ceramic pads from Autozone. Has anyone had luck with these? Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

Look up the procedure for seating / bedding in new pads and rotors that might be all it is.

Thanks. Yeah, I tried all of that stuff. No change.

I always went with Akebono pads and Brembo rotors on my old daily driver a 2012 Altima. Never any issues with noise. I plan to do the same with my 2019 F150, I also see people recommend Power Stop as well. I never get auto parts from Amazon I always here about the knockoffs like you mentioned. I get mine from RockAuto and you can always find a 5% off coupon online.

Just the front, or front and rear? If you did the rear, could it be related to the parking brake shoes and drum (in the rear rotor)?

We just did the rear. I thought about those parking brake shoes as well. But, the squeal only occurs while the disc brakes are being applied. I would think if it were the parking brake shoes it would happen just backing up. I have never seen anything like this.

Might be worth a shot to back off the caliper bolts and re-tourque to spec.

I have the same issue on my '14. I don't know when it began, but It's only when I backup, and only in the morning. I attribute it to moisture.

Did you grease the slide
Pins as well as the clips where the par ears ride?

I use this on pad backings https://a.co/d/56h1AL9

All, I appreciate all the info. To address some of the above, I even bought a new torque wrench recently when we pulled the caliper back off and re-torqued to spec with that. We also greased the "caliper slide bolts", but didn't put any grease on the pad ears where they contact the clips. Maybe that was it. I am just really frustrated with this. I may pull the pads off again and grease those ears as 1ags said and also lightly sand the surfaces of the pads with some 220 grit sandpaper to deglaze. After that, I am just going to toss all of it and replace it. Been looking at some Bosch rotors and pads on RockAuto.

I put a set of power stop pads and rotors on my 2014 last year. Been great so far. I forget the number but there's at least a couple models, I went with the higher end one.

Good luck! When you are in there, inspect the pads and rotors - maybe some dirt/debris got in there? Depending on the location, I could see where it'd squeal in reverse.

Could be the case here. Have seen a lot of discussion this issue of fake/knockoff/refurbished/factory-seconds parts from Amazon. Chinese manufacturers have gotten good a cloning parts and simply packaging them in an box with the same part number. Amazon gets the shipment to their warehouse and dumps them in the same bin as all other parts which may or may not be legit parts.

I use the stuff you spray on the back. It's red and keeps squeaks down. Never had any problem with any pads of any brand but I do stick to the upper end parts house pads or Wagner TQ or SD. I've never done anything other than yank the olds ones out and slap the new ones in. I don't torque or fiddle around with cleaning ever nook. I clean and grease pins, reinstall everything. Drive.

Did you put the inside pad on the outside of the rotor? Just did mine on a 2018 silverado and realized when i did it the last time I installed them improperly. Trying to attach a picture.https://imgur.com/gallery/brake-pad-install-gone-wrong-kuxgrwV

Basically the inside and outside pad are different on where the back plate is attached and if you swap it backwards the caliber will it on the pin on the back plate. I know these are powerstop pads, but the AC delco pads I replaced them with had the same design. Not sure if this is your issue or not but i always noticed a squeek after i put the power stop pads on but never got around to figuring out why until I found the real issue. No noise now after putting them on properly.... who would have thought lol I felt like a real dumbass after doing brakes for ever and not having an issue.

Another way to check is the squealer is on the pade that goes on the inner side of the rotor.
