I bought this truck recently for my son. It's in good mechanical shape with 127,500 original miles. 4"lift, custom stainless dual side exhaust, aftermarket double din stereo, etc. however the paint is in bad shape. He is graduating next month and I want to get him an inexpensive paint job as a present. Is a thousand dollar budget sufficient? Certainly don't expect it to be great, but want it to look decent and protect from rust going forward. Does Macao or similar make sense? Any suggestions for the Houston area? We are I Clear Lake, but can bring it somewhere in the area if anyone had a recommendation.

Do y'all think one of these options makes sense?

I wouldn't. IMO, the truck will look worse with a $1000 paint job than it does now.

If a cheap paint job is a bad idea, how about Poppy's Patina (or similar)?

Your budget is low for any significant paint work. You could try talking to Rod's Collision & Paint in Dickinson, they've done some work for me before. They were cheaper than Maaco and went the extra mile to nail the paint match perfectly.

They may be able to present another option vs full repaint

I would go by a few "mom & pop" type paint shops & get their opinion on what parts to paint & get quotes on that. If only the hood & roof $1,000 might do it.

get some VGG shine juice and go on down the road. i don't think it's worth just painting a few panels, if the rest of the truck is still 20 years old

Thanks for the recommendation.

I stopped by the other day and had him take a look at my 1999 Expedition. He gave me a quote for about $10k so I'm going to have to get a second opinion on that one.

A guy who works for me in Arizona "has a guy" who can probably paint it for less but, I'm not sure if I want to spend 2 days on the road each way to save a few $$$$.

Rod's work did appear to be high quality so, maybe it would be worth it. He can't get to it for a couple months so... we'll see.
