Looking to rebuild my 302 and stroke it to a 347. I have 1987 ford bronco. Engine has 196,000 miles. Have a transmission leak and oil leak. Hopefully I'll finish pulling the engine by Monday. Does anyone have experience w this? Any recommendations on which shop to use. I'm near Waco, so I'm thinking Ledbetter.

It sounds like matching numbers or staying stock isn't important. Are crate 347s a cost competitive option?

Depends on your configuration. After machining, buying the stroker rotating assembly, and the aluminum top end, there is usually a difference of about $800-1000 in cost between buying a crate motor and building it yourself.

One thing to pay attention to is the block. Older blocks don't seem to deal with being stroked as well as the later blocks.

But hey, it's not my money. I would opt to build it myself because I'm cheap.

Depending upon how much HP you produce, you may need to upgrade the intake, exhaust, transmission, diff, and brakes.

I've got an older 302 in a Mustang that I may stroke to 331 someday.

I would strongly suggest going with a 351 or stroked 351.

I have the donor 302. Stock it puts out 185hp. Stroked to 347 I should get 340hp. I know the351 is prob better. But I don't have a donor, guess I could pick one up from salvage. I do want to stay stock as much as I can. I'll put headers and new exhaust. Will also get transmission looked at. May need new radiator. Just the rebuild I've. When quoted is $3.5-4k.
Heck long blocks are 5ish and then you have to purchase manifold etc.

No relevant info for you with regards to stroking your current 302 other than there are some spots along the bottom of the cylinders that have to be opened up to clear the rods when you jump to 347, but I'd assume a competent machine shop would know that or figure it out in the process. I would certainly get a quote and compare to crate engine prices though.

I opted to just buy an ATK 347 short block from Summit and assembled the rest and have been very happy with it. IMO 347 >351w, but in a bronco I'd probably go with a 351.
I had a 289 so didn't have the option to jump with that block up to 347. The short block I received was from an 87 truck. Looking at Summit, it doesn't seem to be available anymore unfortunately. ATK SP24.

It would certainly be cheaper for you to buy a reman 351 vs. machine work and new internals for your 302 to become a 347, especially since it's for a bronco and you have the room. I have a 65 coupe, so not an option for me.

Then just sell the running 302 for a few hundred or keep it as a spare or the next project?

That crate engine will not work with sped density or efi engines. I also have ecm. Crate engine also doesn't include several items I either already have or will have at the noted price. I spoke w the machine shop today

It won't work with factory fuel injected engines because you would need a tune from your factory settings. Just like you will need a tune if you go to a 347.

Yeah, this is not a good idea unless you're planning to go carb, go aftermarket EFI. Otherwise you must attempt learning how to tune an antiquated system, ultimately fail because nobody supports it, and then end up going carb or aftermarket EFI.

Thanks guys.
I figured I may have to go aftermarket efi. I wonder how much PITA that will be? Prob have to upgrade the radiator etc.
hopefully this week I'll finish pulling the engine. Will post pics when I do.

I've fully "megasquirted" my daily driver (88 Volvo 240). While the task seems very daunting, it actually wasn't all that bad. Get some sensors, connect them to the labeled wiring harness, check that they all operate in the software, and fire it up.

Tuning is a whole 'nother thing, but it too isn't as hard as it looks from the outside.

The megasquirt manual is a monster to read through, but realistically almost all the answers you need are in there. Putting efi on your car is basically like taking an open-book exam with an unlimited amount of time to do it in.
