79k miles, emissions light off and on for the past year.

Last night accelerating onto 10, heard a scream, and then started making a high pitch wheezing noise when accelerating. Transmission is shifting fine, just loss of accel power.

Thinking it's the turbo, possibly a hose but nothing is loose. Taking it into ford tomorrow, just not sure what to expect.

I have video with the noise if I can figure out how to post it…

Edit: hoping it's emissions related since that's covered up to 80k miles

Grok:

Likely Cause
1. Turbocharger Failure or Damage:
Symptoms Match: The scream and wheezing noise, combined with a loss of power, suggest a turbocharger issue. The scream could indicate a failing bearing or impeller, and the wheezing might be from a damaged or unbalanced turbo spinning inefficiently or leaking air.
Possible Causes:
Worn or damaged turbo bearings.
Cracked or broken turbo impeller or housing.
Foreign object damage (debris sucked into the turbo).

Emissions Light Connection: A failing turbo can cause improper boost pressure, triggering emissions-related codes (e.g., P0299 for underboost or P0234 for overboost).

What to Expect at Ford: They'll likely pull diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), inspect the turbo for play in the shaft, and check for oil leaks or damage.

Replacement of one or both turbos could be costly (parts and labor could exceed $2,000-$3,000 if not under warranty).

Is this something you would trust to a good local mechanic? Or would it need to be done at Ford

Took it to ford this morning and they're a week out for that line of repairs. So I took it to a local place instead that can see it today or tomorrow.

Verdict:

Failed drivers side turbocharger. Getting it replaced asap

Not sure if serious…lol

It's cheaper than it would have been at the Ford house. And I'm not driving it with the issue it currently has. Hence, guess it's our only option!

I have a 2020 Expedition purchased new in November of '20. I'm thankful for having no issues so far and certainly appreciate bigfoot10s sharing his experience and information.

I'm hoping this is the biggest of our issues, it's been great otherwise.

Finally got it back last night. Ended up getting a new sensor free on the deal as it was throwing a low oil pressure code after they finished with the turbo

Runs great now, best $3k ever spent!

I just got to Fayetteville,Arkansas from Houston this afternoon in my 2020 Expedition. It's nice on the highway but I do keep my fingers crossed for no strange sounds ! Glad you got yours back in good shape and hope for no other issues.

We have a 2020 as well. Only 33k miles but the transmission is such trash, I'm waiting for it to explode at some point, likely at a very inconvenient time I'm sure. We do have the 8yr/100k warranty though

I wish we had the warranty. Don't think ours came with more than 60k for powertrain

Had Ford replace the entire engine (long block swap) on our '19 with 55k miles on it. It had a coolant leak and a cylinder blew up.

I hate that car and can't wait to get rid of it.

ETA the check engine light came on this week. yay.

I added it when we bought, $1700. First month the passenger power step died. Figure that paid for half the warranty. Driver side messing up more and more now but I'm not going to bother taking it in until it completely stops because I'm sure it would be a waste of time and work great while there.

I avoid turbo powered vehicles. Your circumstance gives me 3,100 reasons.

Turbo: God's way of saying, "Not enough cylinders".

There's no replacement for displacement.

4 cylinders: God's way of rewarding women.

Exactly.

One of the best things about auto boards is it's quite easy to search for a symptom you're having with your vehicle and find various threads with people having the same issue and get an idea of what may be the problem.

One of the worst things about auto boards is people who have those issues rarely ever come back and update the thread with what exactly the issue was and the cost to repair it.

Countless times I've read something where they're describing the exact issue I'm having and they all say "I'm taking it to the shop and I'll update this thread with what they say" only to never come back.
