any chevy starter from 63 through 90 should work.

I know this because my uncle owns a '63 vette and when my cousin's 87 Trans Am needed a starter, we walked over to the vette, unbolted the starter, and but it on the TA. Started right up.

Starters are not advanced mechanical devices. any scrap yard or parts store should have one that works for your application

Find your local NAPA

Ask them if they have one with a lifetime warranty. If so, buy that one

Save the receipt as if it were a birth certificate

https://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/c-1267359-general-motors-starters.html

I've had pretty good luck with Tuff Stuff branded starters & alternators. I have had horrible luck with parts store versions, even the lifetime warranty ones from parts stores.

Why do you tease us old guys with a post about a 1972 model year GM product AND NOT POST A PICTURE?!?

It should be mandatory to post a photo of all classic vehicles whenever a topic is started about them.

Buy a starter repair kit. If you can uninstall the starter then you definitely should be able to repair it. I did mine over 10 years ago with no issues. A lot cheaper as well.

They still sell those? When we were using large numbers of natural gas powered irrigation engines, we rebuilt starters and alternators all the time. Then they quit selling the rebuild parts and only selling the whole units

This was probably 40 years ago

I had a 1971 through high school and college. Never should have let it go, but oh well.
To the point, you may have to shim the new starter to get it to engage correctly.

Bad news, Ron…a starter for a 1972 K5 is going to be impossible to find, so it'll probably never run again. But I'll tell you what I'll do…I'll give tree fiddy in cash for that boat anchor.

You could get it rebuilt?

I had worked for an outfit that farmed a little over 100 irrigated circles. I would carry a set of delco 1 wire alternator brushes in the pickup. It was nothing to swap out set of brushes at the pivot on the tailgate of the pickup.

I'd spend the money to upgrade to a PMGR starter off of a late 90s Vortec 350.

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/acdelco-starter-337-1022/11885626-P

~$140 (20% off coupon right now) and will crank faster with less electric draw.
