Last couple of trips to Ireland were manuals. Even in Europe, manuals are starting to fade away. My uncle in Ireland got his first automatic. They were really excited.
Yeah, I got stuck with an automatic Mercedes A-class for six weeks in Germany back in 2009.
When I went to Australia the first time, I asked for a manual at the rental desk. The agent told me she had already reserved an automatic for me because I was American. They ended up giving me a manual Ford Focus sedan in both Alice Springs and Sydney, which was fun to try from the right seat.
So these companies will definitely put you in an automatic, just because they assume Americans don't know how to or want to drive a manual.
Underpowered and manual can still be a lot of fun, as can be overpowered and automatic, but a small underpowered car with an automatic is just painfully boring to drive.
