So, my 2001 Dodge Dakota has finally reached the point where it's just too expensive to repair - it needs the transmission replaced along with the transmission PCM, a bit over $6k.

Since its primary use was as a car for my college age son, I'm figuring on a Camry as a replacement. Are the 4 banger Camries a no go, or are they good enough for a high school or college kid?

They're reliable and excellent cars.

My neighbor is selling a 4 cylinder 2015 Camry SE with 71,000 miles for $15k. Located in Sugar Land. I can get you his contact information if that's something you might be interested in.

The Toyota 4-banger in the Camry, especially in the last decade, are very good overall engines. Easy to fix (not that it'll need any), efficient, have enough get-up, and they'll last and last.

Posted this on another thread the other day. The Camry is actually a '21. I'd go Accord over Camry all day. The Accord is more comfortable, drives better, and has a nicer interior.

My older son has a 2020 Camry SE and younger son a 2022 Accord Sport. I drove each for about a year and a half (I put close to 30K/yr) before passing them down. I liked the Accord much more than the Camry. If you can find a 2.0 Accord, even better

Out of curiousity, does anyone have any experience with manual transmission Camrys? I know the last year they made them for the US was 2011.

I ask because I learned to drive a stick on VW products (and owned an Audi A4 when I was young and single), so I'm used to a strong clutch take up.

I remember trying to drive my buddy's dad's Honda Civic stick shift, and I had a heck of a time feeling the clutch engage. I think I stalled it 3 times driving like 5 miles.

Edit to add: Mostly a moot point, since the nearest one listed on Autotrader is in Memphis. Ah well.

i'd venture to guess the camry had a pretty boring and uninspiring manual gearbox, and easy / boring clutch. probably a rarity to find one in a manual.

There's actually a 1987 Camry currently on Autotrader. With just over 87k miles.

Wowzer.
