Dad moved from TX to TN about 9 years ago and is back in TX now, due to health reasons he can no longer drive. He decided to give his 2013 F-150 to my son who is now learning to drive and he wanted to transfer the title over to me. When he purchased the truck he lived in TX and he couldn't locate the title so I helped him send in an app to get a copy and TX responded back that he surrendered his TX title to TN when he registered the vehicle there. Now I have to submit an app to TN to get him a copy of the title.

Once he has the TN title can he transfer that directly to me in TX and me receive a new TX title in my name? Anyone have any idea how out of state titles transfer?

Did this about 5 years ago gifting a vehicle from our of state to my daughter in Texas.

The details are in the archives on this forum somewhere.

The only problem we ran into was the freaking Iranian guy at a local mailbox store who we got to notarize the Texas application document, did it in the wrong place. So we had to fill out the form again.

From memory, there was even an FAQ on the Texas DPS Website about how to do this.

Also, it might not pertain to your situation but Texas will try to charge you a $90 sales tax fee for registering an out of state vehicle.

So if your father has any proof that the vehicle was purchased and registered in Texas previously, that will save you $90 on registration.

Since this is uncommon, you'll need to mention it to the clerk at the County before they screw it up and you have to file with the State Comptroller's office to get your $90 back.

I'd have him transfer the title back to TX in his name, and then give it to you for $10 tax.

I bought a motorcycle in PA a couple of years ago. I don't remember any added tax for it being out of state when I titled it here. I paid tax on the purchase amount.

Get TN title
Have dad convert to TX title
Give car to you for $10 gift tax
