We purchased a car out of state and had it shipped. Surprisingly easy process for the most part.

We were under the impression that they used some service the operated in all states and would directly register it in TX for us. But that doesn't seem to be the case now that we have the car. They fedexed us Florida paper plates and registration papers.

I don't really care about having to handle the TX part myself. Only paid for one registration process which appears to have been in Florida, despite what they said.

Do I just need to do some sort of transfer paperwork and get it inspected and go get plates locally?

As I said in the OP, we were told it was being taken care by some company that specializes in handling it for all states. My expectation that would make it like buying in state.

Then they sent us Florida temporary plates and registration and said they would be sending the real plates when they arrived. I assume now those will be Florida plates and nothing will be done in Texas.

Since we only paid for one "registration " I'm not that worried about it regarding the dealer. Just need to figure out my steps to get it legal in TX at some point. Heck, maybe I should use the Florida one for a year and get my money out of that registration.

Pretty sure you will have to pay Texas sales tax when you register it too.

Found out a couple things. Jumped the gun on my post I guess.

Posting this for completion in case anyone wonders.

Turns out the dealer did do as they indicated and used a company that takes care of the registration in TX and whatever needs to happen between Florida and TX. I was thrown off by them sending us Florida temp tags. So in our case, we should not have to do anything further, the car will get registered here and we will end up with TX plates.

In the process of looking into it, I confirmed the steps noted above if you didn't use a company like that dealer did and just bought and brought it here yourself.

Title or Lien paperwork
Emission inspection
Proof of Insurance
Registration form
AND the BIG one
6.25% REGISTRATION tax. They don't call it sales tax. But they are basically charging you sales tax yet again on a purchase. Funny how it is sales tax instate and registration tax out of state.

So definingly investigate having this all taken care of as part of the sale if you are buying out of state. Which seems to be more common and, mostly, was a pretty easy process.

The out of state dealer called it registration tax?

You do not have to necessarily pay the full 6.25% if you have already paid sales tax out of state. You owe the difference between the 6.25% Texas sales tax and the sales tax charged out of state. If the out of state dealer charges you $0, then you will owe the full 6.25%, if they charge you 3%, then you would only owe 3.25%. Of course you will need a bill of sale to prove what you paid.

The person at the Texas dmv called it a registration tax when I asked about buyingnoutnofnatate and registering it here.

I assume the company the dealer uses takes care of figuring out that difference and taking care of things.

Son was visiting me in Arizona earlier this year and bought a new truck. Dealer collected sales tax and registered it here. They gave him a 60 day Arizona license plate. When he got the title he just went to Bexar County with the paperwork showing Maricopa County collected sales tax and he just had to pay registration.

If the seller doesn't report it, tell the tax office you spent way less than what you paid for it and save yourself a little tax money.

Vehicles shouldn't be taxed more than once. It amazes me that our government makes money every time someone sells a vehicle. Even if that vehicle has been sold a dozen times.

That hasn't worked in years. Google Texas SPV calculator. Enter the info, get the value, multiply by .8, then multiply that number by .0625 for the tax amount.

That's used vehicles only isn't it? I don't know whether the OP bought new or used. I know you don't have to pay sales tax on an out of state new purchase when registering in Texas if you show proof you paid it out of state.
