Wife's car has an unknown device plugged into OBD. If unplugged while running car dies, if removed while off it won't turn back on.

How would I go about removing this permanently?

Best guess is some safe driving monitor from insurance, but that is just a guess.

Did y'all just the car? What's the make and model? No device from insurance should cause it to stop running when unplugged. Any name or number written on the device? Can you upload a picture of it?

My grandmas old crown Vic had a plug that stayed in the obd port and if removed the car wouldn't start. I know this because as a kid we unplugged it and she didn't know. Paid to tow it to the ford house, where they saw it lying under the seats, plugged it in, and sent her on her way. That earned a heck of a spanking!

Are you positive that's the obd port? There are anti theft devices that work like this. Ravelco is one. But there are others.

Best we can tell my wife installed as part of insurance safe driving program. Not 100% certain and timeline is unknown…

It is plugged directly into OBD port, and car won't start or run without this being inserted.

Finding little info online other than the OEM was bought out by Verizon and no info on how to uninstall.

Any thoughts on how to uninstall? My concern is (and I'm out of my depth) that some minor software was installed upon inserting that will require flashing the system to remove.

why don't you check on your insurance if you have something enabled?

Insurance companies and ride sharing companies use this

Why it doesn't start without it is a mystery.

Is wife's car a Toyota by chance?

Yup, that device is used by insurance companies as a drive safe type program or by ride share companies. Why it can't be simply removed is interesting.

It shows a Bluetooth symbol so you might look up that brand name 'in drive' and see if there's an app that could talk to it.

I don't have any advice to add, but I don't understand why the car won't start without it. Looks like its just a monitoring device, just like you would plug in an OBD scanner. It's not really 'wired in'.

Any way you can remove the device, and plug in an OBD scanner and see if you have any soft codes that you can clear with the device NOT in the obd? Maybe the no start condition is unrelated somehow??

I'd make sure there's no other piggy back devices plugged in between the factory wiring and the OBD port

This.
Maybe there is an interrupter that requires the dongle to be installed. Possibly for a fleet tracker.
