We currently have a 2013 Honda pilot. Has 210,000 miles on it. It has been an absolute beast and never left us stranded but ready for something newer.

Would like to spend in the low $30s. Seeing plenty of 2023 pilots in that range. Also considering going up a size to an Expy but all the cam phaser and transmission posts on the years I'm looking at have me hesitant. Throw me all your thoughts and opinions on the two. This is a three kid hauler ages 4 to 13 and my wife drives about 300-350 miles/week.

My brother has 2 fairly recent Expeditions and my stepfather has his deceased father's 2000 Expedition. I used to know someone with a Pilot but am not familiar with them. My mom has an Enclave (Buick) but it might be too small for your needs. Another option is to look at 4Runners.

In 2015 I upsized my Pilot to a Toyota Sequoia. I've never looked back. I loved it. Still have it and bought a second. Look for a low-mileage, 2nd generation Sequoia.

Low mileage sequoia and decent price don't really exist. Plus that thirsty V8 and how much we drive it isn't as appealing.

2nd Gen Sequoia V8's have the leaking valley plate issue with is a PITA to fix.

Also, Minivan....

Man I have tried to sell the minivan but wife isnt biting. We do pull a small utility trailer as well. I know a minivan could theoretically do that too but its not happening.

Low $30s will likely get you a 6-8 year old Sequoia w/ 100,000 miles.

I have no idea what you're talking about. It's never been an issue for me.

Now, we have rented minivans on vacation… they were awesome. But my ego couldn't handle driving one.

The ego thing honestly kills me...like, NO ONE thinks you are less of a man b/c your wife drives a minivan most days and you may drive it on vacation. It's not 1992 anymore.

When compared to a Highlander or Pilot (or similar), the costs aren't much different. But when compared to the larger SUV's, the cost of gas, tires, insurance, maintenance, registration, property taxes (if you're state has those) for long term ownership can send you and the wife to Hawaii (or other salt water island in the Caribbean) every few years - congrats on the hotel nookie. Not to mention they are 10x more practical when long hauling with a family than an SUV.

If you have to pull something, then the Pilot does make a lot more sense.

RE: The V8 Sequoia thing, IIRC, it was fixed on the last year or two of the Gen 2 models, but it was a big thing on the early ones.

Bought a used 2021 Pilot one year ago. My wife is a realtor and puts lots of mileage on the car. She loves it. Drives well, has lots of room for signs or staging material.

I have two, minor complaints. The 10 speed transmission can be somewhat dimwitted and slow. But the way my wife drives, she doesn't notice it. Second, if you ever have to jump the battery, let's face it, it will happen some day, you have to disassemble the engine compartment to get to the damn thing.

I still like the car and have no regrets.

Another option however, is a Mazda CX-9
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Is a sequoia any bigger than a new pilot in the inside?

If you are used to Honda reliability then I think the ford will disappoint you.

Second generation Sequoias are huge inside. Cavernous. Over 48" wide even at the narrowest point (that's the width of a Buccee's pit and I got one back there).

A 2025 Honda pilot has a cargo space of 111.8-113.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded down. A second generation Toyota Sequoia has 120.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded down.

Isn't the Sequoia like 10cu.ft. when all the seats are up? Also, crazy high lift height to get it into the back?

Edit, that's the Highlander I'm thinking of....
