Paint job - dealership vs third party?

Looking to crowd source some advice here as I struggle to make decisions like this.

I have a 2017 Tahoe with around 92k miles that I still enjoy driving and like the look of. However there were some factory paint issues from 2015-2019 in which the clear coat painting quality was not up to snuff and so there's a large number of vehicles in which the hood and the roof now look like a chicken has walked on top of for years.

Random link from many for reference: https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/250582-2015-2019-tahoe-and-suburban-uv-paint-issues-on-hood-and-roof/

There's been some class actions filed, but nothing has progressed far enough to think they are realistically going to honor anything.

First dealership I took it to quoted me $2500. I dragged my feet a bit getting quotes from a third parties (Maaco) in the $5k range) and now that original dealership actually has closed its body shop. The next closest Chevy dealership is quoting me $6k -- basically stating that hood and roof have to be removed, paint stripped, etc, etc...

It's a gunmetal greyish type color, so not solid black or white... is taking it to a 3rd party to get painted just asking for a crap job that wont match the rest of the vehicle? I want it done well, but spending $6k on a vehicle that is 8 years old and KBB valued at $22-24k at best seems like a dumb move.

Thoughts? Get a few more dealerships to look at/quote it? Any third party companies that people swear by?

Hood and roof shouldn't be more than a $2500 job on that size car.

Had the hood/roof on my X5 repainted at a normal body shop ~4 years ago. Hood had been in a fire with bubbling paint and the clear was milky on the roof. $1200 and still looks fine after sitting outside under the sun without a ton of paint care.

I had the same problem with the hood and roof on my black 2015 Yukon XL. I had the hood repainted when it was already in an independent body shop after I got rear ended. That was in 2023 and they quoted 1100 for the hood and 2100 for the roof. At the time they told me they see it all the time in all colors of GM SUVs. Paint and GM has long been an issue My 1996 Tahoe had the clear coat start peeling and flaking off of the roof and hood at about 6-8 years. A reputable/recommended body shop in your area will likely do a good job and cost way less than the dealer.

GM has had paint problems going back to the mid-eighties. I had an 85 Suburban that had a paint delaminating problem. A class action lawsuit against GM resulted in a multimillion dollar settlement to repaint suburbans. The only problem is is it only covered 87-82 year models.

I took it to several dealerships and paint shops for estimates. They. All quoted $4500-$6500 to repaint the vehicle, which a lot of $$ back then. A guy at one of the shops let in on a little secret. He said everyone was quoting me high prices because they didn't want to repaint suburbans. They could make more money repairing several cars in the same timeframe as painting a suburban. He then said we just all of the suburbans that come in with the problem to Macco. Told me to just take it directly to Macco and avoid the dealership mark up.

I took it to Macco and got it done for $1300. The owner was an old Aggie, and when I walked with my Aggie hat, he threw in some extras (window trim) for no extra charge.

Macco back then had several levels of quality paint jobs, depending upon price. It may be the same today. I felt like I got a paint job for the price and kept the suburban for 17 years (2002). Since then I quit buying GM vehicles and went with Toyotas. I've never had a paint problem with the four Toyotas I have had.

Location?

Remember, most body shops are going to blend your new paint to your 8 year old paint. For your hood that's just 2 fenders, but the roofline touches the doors, rear qtr panels, and ass end. That's a lot of blending.

Painted Auto Parts can ship you a painted hood for 1500 or so, but it definitely won't "match" your old stuff.
