I have a 2017 F150 with a rock ding and a two-inch crack extending from it that Safelite said would 99 percent certain break completely if they tried to do the typical ding repair. (Ding is about eight inches up from the bottom on the driver's side.)

They explained replacement would involve recalibrating the "camera" that that detects side motion and the like. This recalibration effectively doubles the price of replacement.

Anybody here gone through this before? Are there alternatives? Is the recalibration essential or just an add-on to generate more revenue? Thanks for any insights.

Recalibration is needed. The cameras/sensors have to calibrate for the optical differences in the glass and mounting pads. I'd make sure they can actually do your car. Last one I had replaced, they didn't have the tools to do the calibration and I had to do it myself. They discounted the service quite a bit.

Have you searched for a Safelite coupon online? It's been a couple of years since I used them last, but I could always find a decent coupon online. I've also always gotten onsite discounts by having the car in the shade, giving the guys a drink, and helping with disassembly where I can.

Have you also checked to make sure you don't have full glass coverage on your insurance?

I have had two windshields replaced,
One in my 2021 F150 and one in my 2022 Lightning. Neither time did I have to recalibrate my sensors.

Also, safelite sucks.

Go the dealer that sells your make/model and ask who they use for glass service.

Safe lite dented the roof of my in-laws Tacoma during install and caused 6500 in damage.
