So new cars are now delivered with a permanent plate. This seems like a good move to stop bad actors on temp tags however now you are driving with no sticker for a few weeks until the state mails it to you. Seems like it will be a pain for getting pulled over for no sticker.

It's exactly the same as before. They give you a temporary registration paper until you get your sticker. Just like with paper plates.

Mine has been expired for over 2 years, I have yet be pulled over. Show the paper work, move on. Much better than the paper tag thing.

True but at least with paper tags they had no reason to pull you over if the tags were valid dates.

Maybe the autistic libertarian in me but I don't think I should have to show anything to, or talk to the cops if I have done nothing wrong.

Just bought a Ford Expedition yesterday.

Real plates were installed when I picked it up. I doubt there is a single officer pulling someone over because they saw the sticker, 99% of that is done with plate readers on the computer.

Ironically, I got pulled over a few weeks ago for my license plate falling off and my sticker was 5 months out of date (I had it, just never swapped it). The officer asked me about it and as I was explaining he said "you are all good, I have it all here" as he looked at his iPhone. Told me to fix it and I went on my way.

I see the winking face, so I'm guessing this is a joke. That said, I would think this creates an interesting legal conundrum in which someone is pulled over for no registration due to having just bought the car and committing no other observable crimes but drugs are found in the car during the stop. If the car is not registered, finding the drugs is kosher. But if it is, then there was no reason for the stop so the drugs shouldn't be admissible.

Pulling you over for no registration is not probable cause to search your vehicle.

"no, I do not consent to a search of my vehicle officer" is all you need to say.

If they do it anyway, they search would be found to be illegal and the evidence would be thrown out and you get to sue the city/county/sheriff/whatever for violating your 4th amendment rights.

You're not wrong, but just because someone is breaking the law doesn't mean that their constitutional rights should be violated.

Probably a poor example but there certainly exists a scenario where it could cause problems. What if the drugs were discovered bit by a search but my an officer "detecting the odor of marijuana"? What if by a K9 while on the stop? Or more minor, what about a driver without a license who, but for the unreasonable stop, would not have been discovered?

It wouldn't be any different than me getting pulled over because my new sticker hasn't arrived. I have the printout from the state just like a new car purchase will have the paper from the dealer. If I got pulled over right now for it and smelled like dope in the car, PC is established.

My dad and I have both been stopped by DPS in the last 3 months due to the trooper seeing (or in his case, not seeing) the sticker.

His was a new car that the dealer installed the plate on but didn't install the sticker. DPS saw no sticker and pulled across a 5 lane divided highway to make contact.

Mine had been expired for more than a few months and somehow eagle eye saw it across the highway.

They seem to be cracking down on it more since they're not at the border. The last few years have been a free for all with covid and border tours.
